I can't find it anywhere now but I know I've read an article or interview where Riley took exception to the University of Kentucky's lack of defense of Adolph Rupp.
Riley disagrees vehemently with the modern characterization of Rupp.
“I love people as individuals, but I hate people in groups.”
Loved the two all-americans, Riley and Dampier of the 66/67 Rupps Runts. The real glue on that team was Larry Conley and Tommy Kron IMO. Kron and Conley graduated from that team and returning the two all-americans along with center Thad Jaracz for the 67 season only went 13/13 on the year.
As far as the racist issue, Rupp recruited Wes Iunseld and Butch beard who both went to UL. He also had black players on his high school teams.
Racism was speculation from a few sports writers and nothing more than revisionist history.
During Rupp’s time at UK, southern teams had no blacks on their roster including DUKE AND NORTH CAROLINA.
IN 1961 Mississippi State won the SEC conference title and the right to play in the NCAA tournament under coach Babe McCarthy but refused to go due to having to play against black players. RUPP and THE cats had finished in second place and were selected to replace Miss St in the tourney.
Most people probably have never read that because that wouldn't fit those writers revisionist history.
