Social Media in Rupp- Hall Transition

Can you imagine if there had been social media in the time of the transition from Coach Rupp to Joe B.?

Those of you who were around then will understand this…who will be the Jimmy Dan against North Carolina at Freedom Hall and its moment that set Mark Pope rolling for next decade?

    History does repeat itself.

The only difference, Joe B’s predecessor cared about UK deeply. Popes did not.

Yeah - Hall probably wouldn't have lasted all the way to '78.

I disagree with that. Rupp made 1 Final Four in his last 14 years after the title in 1958. Hall made it in his 3rd year and won the title 3 years after that. The bigger question imo is how hard people would have been going after Rupp at the tail end of his career.

Joe B replacing the legendary Rupp was a monumental undertaking but was softened somewhat due to Rupps age and his declining success

college basketball climate has changed dramatically since then. I'm not sure how Hall would would have fared with today's rules in place with NIL, the transfer portal erc.
perhaps Oweh can finally get going and be the Jimmy Dan Connor we all thought he could be

I think the better "what if social media..." scenario in this case is how Rupp did not want to retire, wasn't quiet about it, kept an office in Memorial and kept his own weekly local TV show. Would have provided endless digital fodder for 70s fans.

Don’t disagree, my point was that media/social media was 1/1000th, of what it was back then and you will remember people were unmerciful on Coach Hall and ready to fire him after the blowout loss to Indiana…comparable to the loss to Michigan State is to Pope. If The next big game turns out to be a big win, then I am hoping for a Jimmy Dan turning point moment.

No one was ever on Rupp or Hall about their teams not playing with effort.

The hate would have been tremendous! HATE HATE HATE

I don't necessarily mean real hate so much as faux hate.

                It's all too easy to

                a. express anger on social media
                b. seem angry to everyone else when you're really just expressing an opinion with which others disagree

Tone is so so difficult to read or get across on social media.

I'd bet there would have been quite a bit of consternation over that Georgetown game.

They sure did that with Joe B, especially in his post-title years. I remember that well. Was too young to pick up if it happened in the very late Rupp era.

Rupps teams towards the end of his career weren't as talented as the past but they all played with a lot of effort and energy. Rupp would never have let it happen any less.
the states mandatory retirement age for state employees was reason he was terminated . He was not happy about i.t at all.
i remember people were very devided over Rupp and hall
personally I hated rupp leaving but I knew it was time.

Coach Rupp’s last season practices were so difficult because he so wanted to coach the Super Kittens which were last non-eligible frosh class. It was particularly difficult on the Super Kittens being pulled in two directions.

Yeah, I absolutely loved that freshman class. I think Joe B had a huge hand in recruiting those guys. They included the MR BAKETBALL fron Indiana,Illinois,Ohio and Kentucky.

Very close to many of those guys to this day…an everlasting bond…so blessed to have been around the program at a very challenging time.

There were a lot of complaints about Hall, I agree.

But I never heard anyone complain about the effort.

I’ve never heard effort complaints about any UK teams by any coach until now.

Tubby is my least favorite coach ever. But even his teams played effort. Even when they didn’t play well.
