He wasn’t prepared for the opportunity he was given and just blew it. His coaching methods didn’t resonate and were completely crazy.

Billy G reminded me of Ricky Bobby coaching UK saying "if u ain't first ur last" but always finishing last.

BCG wound up in Texas, first at Ranger Community College in Ranger (middle of nowhere.) Had some compliance issues, can't remember the details.

Now he's moved up in the world:

Head coach at Tarleton State Univ. in Stephenville, 1.5 hours southwest of Fort Worth, edge of nowhere. Part of the A&M system. Pretty big drop from Texas A&M, different universe from UK. Amazingly self destructive man...

I'll always think of this when I think of the BCG years.... classic moment.

Cyprien has tagged right along with him though he was here with him at UK too.

It doesn't really bother me. It was super short lived and some humorous, face palming moments came out of it. Obviously the Eddie Sutton years with the Chris Mills/Duane Casey/Emory Worldwide package fiasco was a lot worse and a lot more embarrassing...but we did end up with Rick Pitino as a result. I guess it could be looked at the same way with Gillispie ending up giving us John Calipari, who, for a hot minute, restored pride and results in the program and brought us a national championship....until his ego got the best of him and he felt like his attention, focus and priorities needed to be pulled in a totally different direction.

This is pretty much me. Sutton and Gillispie were fairly short periods and gave rise to something much better. Really, part of the reason Gillispie looks even worse than he was - if that's possible - is that his short train-wreck 2 years came directly on the heel of 2-3 mediocre years with Tubby. So that made it a longer bad stretch.

However, Cal had 3-4 sub-par seasons, but then 4 or 5 more that were just terrible. For me as a fan, those last 7-9 years of Cal were the worst stretch of UK basketball since I started following the Cats 40 years ago. And not just because of the results. Because it was painfully obvious his top priority wasn't even in winning games. At least you knew Gillispie actually was trying to win the games.

                    YES!

                    YES!

                    YES!

There was great potential in those teams. GREAT POTENTIAL!

Unfortunately, Cal lost sight of his mission and decided that he ONLY job was getting guys into the league in order to maintain his self image as the great * savior of high school basketball players and their families.

In the end, he seems to have done quite a few of them some damage in their ability to make those millions. He cost quite a few of his players draft position and caused them to go lower and get lessor rookie contracts.

Cal's ego pretty much screwed everyone.

And that prevent offense.....JEEZ! It was like trying that good ol' North Carolina Four Corners and forgetting there was a shot clock.

I always thing of "Every which way but loose" movie, Right Turn Clyde. BCG could have learned something from that orangutan. But his line was more like the scrap the caddy line except replace caddy with program.

Clyde would have dropped the car on him.
Going forward, Christian Laettner volunteers to catch any dildos flung on a basketball court - or anywhere else.

BCG was not built for the bright lights of Kentucky. He may have been the "hottest coach" at the time but if someone doesn't have the tools to deal with the pressure cooker that is the Kentucky coach, he should have never been hired....that was on Mitch

I remember being fully on board the BCG wagon when he was hired ... and fully ready to fire him when he was fired.

I gave him a full pass for the first season and blamed Tubby's "country club" culture. We needed to be "tuff" (sic). I didn't believe the stories about how awful he was.

Then, he lost to VMI to open the second season, started Michael Porter at PG and surrounded two studs in PP and Meeks with 10-13th man types on a traditional UK team. He embarrassed the university with bizarre interviews on national TV and played some lineups that made Cal's 3-big lineups look genius. By mid-season, I was out on BCG.

I think his standoffish personality, adjusting to life in the UK fishbowl, and his love of liquor and ladies were more than he could handle.
