Mike Brey was the name I always heard as a candidate Barnhart had targeted for when the time came. Irony being that Brey's career was more off the rails than Cal's by the time the divorce happened.
If Cal left in 2019, Mitch's first call would have been to Shaka Smart.

You probably would have had a list of guys like Mike Brey, Sean Miller and Chris Mack most likely.

          We're lucky he didn't try in 2024.

Just getting to this thread. I'll offer up either of our two regular season losses to the vile orange stain in 1977. We ended up tied with them at 16-2 in the conference and they got the auto bid due to the head to head result. SECT didn't come back for two more years. Cost us the opportunity to play in the Mideast regional at brand new Rupp Arena. You were allowed to play NCAAT games on your home court back then. We instead played in the East regional at Maryland and fell to the Tar Heels and the odious four corners offense. Stupid vols were tournament chokers even back then, I think they lost in the first round and never even made it to Lexington.

2004 loss to UAB is an obvious choice....but I'll go back a little further.

The 1988 tournament loss to Villanova. UK was a #1 seed and had Rex Chapman, Winston Bennett, Ed Davender, Rob Lock, etc. No way they should have been upset by an inferior Villanova squad in the Sweet 16. Had they won that game they would have had Oklahoma, Arizona and Kansas to beat on the way the another title. Oklahoma has Stacey King and Mookie Blaylock, but they were beatable. Arizona had Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr, but they were beatable, and Kansas really only had Danny Manning and ended up winning the title!

I don't want to say that he is overrated....but I really struggle to think of anyone I would say is more overrated than Shaka Smart.

This is another one I thought about.

And I have almost no memory of this game. I would've been 10, so "the bug" hadn't hit me yet. BUT I remember my dad being seriously distraught about this game. Like you said, I remember sitting at a local gas station listening to him and some other guy stalk about it, and the consensus was that UK was gonna win with relative ease.

That (2019) was the moment in time when I was ready to move on from Cal (after the Elite 8 loss to Auburn, who we'd beaten twice already...once at Auburn and the other time by almost 30 at Rupp). It was pretty apparent that Cal was going to be at Kentucky like nearly all of his players were - one (title) and done.

Of course, a few months later was exactly when Mitch decides to give Cal his "LIFETIME CONTRACT"....so there ya go.

                          2008 Gardner Webb...

                          2013 Robert Morris

                          Both losses were EMBARRASSING 😫

Probably UAB followed by WV 2010 ( I know doesn't count for this).

Still , the one game of all games is the Wisconsin game. That game was modern day history in the making in regards to potentially going undefeated in the modern era and Cal simply could not pull the right strings..

Talking about throwing someone under the bus.

After that , I sold the bus, bought a train with AI powered on demand reverse.

Also agree with TrueblueCatfan, Gardner Webb Robert Morris Saint Peters Oakland just absolutely no excuse whatsoever.

That fact millions of people didn't storm Lexington with pitchforks blows my mind...

2002 Maryland sweet 16. Take out eventual champs (n reality) and then uconn, ku and iu to win it all lol. Hey, a man can dream.

I have to watch myself when I think of the Wisconsin game.... because up to that point, Cal was almost God-like in stature in Lexington. As much as that game infuriated me.... because I saw a coach making decisions, especially involving personnel, late in the game that was a bit mind-blowing....I realize that saying I wanted him gone immediately after that game is looked at as insane by the faithful. I was probably pretty close, though....almost as much as I was in 2019 in being ready for him to hit the road. I just needed to calm down and be reasonable.....but that loss was inexcusable. The difference between then and 2019 was that the luster was off the bloom by 2019 and the Cal fanatics that had the upper hand in 2015 had experienced 4 more years of disappointment . That made it easier to be a bit more vocal by 2019. And of course, after what transpired between 2019 and 2024 it became a no-brainer. At that point it was simply saying to the holdouts "glad to see you FINALLY on board, I've been occupying this seat since 2019"......
