Count me in. I only met Lighthouse (Steve) once. Football opener tailgate in a Newport parking lot before the Cats played Miami OH across the river. He was very gracious. As you were, WildcatRick. Always appreciated his posts on these forums. Prayers for his family.👍 2Comment

Two stories about Lighthouse.
One, he came to most of my son’s high school games his sophomore year, just before COVID. Just showed up. At an AAU game somewhere god knows where, I look over and there’s Steve. My son still talks about that.
And two, Steve played a part in American sports history. When ESPN first came on the air, because of contractual disputes they had to show obscure sports. The very first event ever aired was a game featuring the Kentucky Bourbons pro softball team. Lighthouse was the coach of that team.👍 7Comment

What a roller coaster of a thread. Just devastating. I didn’t know the man but from all the love shown in this thread, he must have been one heck of a person. Prayers sent.👍 1Comment

Lighthouse is another that is irreplaceable. He was a former official and at one time gave a yearly question and answer rule questionnaire I could never get more than one or two right. He sent me advice years ago when I was going through a tough time and along with Matt and others kept contact with me when my wife passed. Another of those I should have called more. God's peace to his wife Phyllis and his kids and grands.
He was one of the "mature" posters that a few took the wrong way, but he had respect for all that posted...and worried at times he had offended. (I told him not to worry about it...it's just opinions).
Im going to miss him a lot.

And if this isn’t a testament to his impact on the site, I don’t know what is: through this recent influx of new members, every time I’ve felt compelled to speak as a mod I’ve asked myself, “How would Lighthouse feel about this,†and let the answer guide my decision.

It feels odd being upset about the passing of a man I never met, but I've thoroughly enjoyed interacting with him over the last 20 years. I'll miss his officials reports of games, as I feel I learned more about basketball through those than I thought I could.
Steve reached out to me when I was dealing with the loss of a friend. One of my closest friends committed suicide in 2017, and although I'm not a religious person, we had a number of spiritual conversations about that incident. He'll never know how appreciated that was. Absolutely devastating news for the board and the entire BBN.
Please share some information as it comes up. If his services or any family are in the Louisville area, I'm happy to help however.
If they are, I'm happy to get some food sent for the visitation. Being in the food industry has given me a lot of contacts in the city, and I will happily make some calls to get things sent over. Anyone who knows him personally can message me if that would be beneficial.👍 2☕ 2Comment

Indeed. Admittedly, my tone can be a little…acerbic at times, and that could lead to the occasional disagreement due primarily to generational differences and our stances on Calipari. But he always had my respect and admiration for both the way he carried himself and the life he lived. I called him a couple days after learning of his situation, and I’m so glad I did. We had a very good chat and wrapped things up knowing full well that we genuinely cared about each other.

Steve was a special person, a highly accomplished official and student of many sports, and a huge UK fan. He's going to missed by so many people, and we won't ever forget him here.👍 2Comment
