    John Clay Retiring

Clay is retiring from the Herald-Leader. Has been there 36 years. This would have taken him from the last year of Eddie Sutton's tenure up through Mark Pope.

I respect the longevity but his work almost always "well, duh" to me. No real insight. I prefer Mark Story there by open lengths.

I thought Clay was okay, but it's been many years since I've read him.

Sportswriting like that feels old-fashioned by today's standards. You can find better and more revealing takes by just looking around on social media. The eloquent, almost poetic way those guys write about sports is kind of not needed anymore when we have this much information and this many "takes."

I do still like long-form sportswriting like you used to see in SI, but I honestly don't read a ton of that anymore either.

Joe Posnanski is very good. Focuses mainly on baseball but can write interestingly on any topic.

A long career that deserves many kudos.
