    Notre Dame Preview

Notre Dame is next and a chance to go to the Final Four for the third time in four season. UK and Notre Dame have a long history. They played every season for many years. UK leads the series 42-19. Notre Dame has won two of the last three times. Both were in South Bend. They have met twice in the NCAA's. First time in 1958. UK beat them in the Mideast Regional final by 33 points in route to a national championship. In 1970 UK beat them again in the Mideast semi finals 109-99. Dan Issel had 44 points and Notre Dame's Austin Carr had 52! I would have loved to have seen that game. The last time Notre Dame made a regional final was in 1979. They were in the FInal Four with UK in 1978 but lost to Duke in the semi's in a very close game. That's the only time ND has been in a Final Four. I'm sure our old friend Digger is just salivating over this game tomorrow night.
For this ND team, they are 32-5 on the season. They won the ACC tournament by beating Duke and North Carolina in back to back games. That doesn't happen often in that tournament. The only non conference loss was to Providence very early in the season. They have two losses to teams not making the NCAA's,Pitt and Syracuse. They are as good as it gets offensively. They are an outstaniding shooting team. They shoot 51% from the field and 39% from the three's and 74% from the foul line. They have good assists to turnover ratio and they are even on the boards with 32 a game. Jerrian Grant is a do it all player. He can go inside or outside. He can bring the ball up the floor and take it to the rim. He will play in the NBA soon. Connaughton is a deceptively good athlete. A very good shooter and defender. He also moonlights as a pitcher in the minor leagues in the summertime. Jackson looks like a really good point guard. He can shoot well from the outside and take it to the rim. Zach Auguste is their lone true big man at 6-10. They cannot afford to get him into foul trouble. They look like they only play 6 people so fatigue could play a big role in this game. ND is not a good defensive team. Wichita got a lot of good looks and were able to drive it to the basket. They just missed a lot of easy shots early and had to play uphill the rest of the game. ND barely eeked out two wins early in the tournament. I said then they are either going to be one of those incredibly lucky teams to win the tournament or they get knocked out with a huge loss.
This will be a classic matchup of defense vs offense. UK is good as gets defensively and ND is as good as it gets offensively. Most times the defense wins out in this type of matchup. I like UK by about 10. Close early but UK wears them down and wins 78-68.

Game time 8:49 pm Saturday night and will be televised by TBS.

Only way it's close early is if Notre Dame comes out hitting 3s at a good clip. I like UK by more than 10, though.

The one thing I've noticed so far is that taking other teams' stats and using that as a measure of what they might be able to do against Kentucky seems to be a fairly useless exercise. Those stats were accumulated playing teams that aren't of the same caliber by any stretch. Much more often than not, UK has taken the other team out of their game.

The same will be with Notre Dame. Whatever their averages are, they won't reach `em, save for FT % - and that's something that the other team has no control over.

I agree with Surveyor. As long as UK doesn't let ND get on some huge roll shooting threes they should be OK. Hold ND to around, say less than 10 will be good enough to beat them. If they start getting around the 12 mark then the game may get dicey.

Notre Dame relentlessly runs their stuff. They have five main guys and they kind of get into this machine-like rhythm on offense. Everybody has a role, everybody's a threat.

The good news for UK is that they have no depth and they're very small. Even Wichita St. went through 75% of that game last night getting what they wanted at the rim. The worrying news is that Notre Dame has one of the nation's best point guards, and UK's defense this year has only been stymied by dribble penetration. Jerian Grant and Demetrius Jackson are mirrors of one another, and they're going to try and drive Kentucky to death. Teams like Florida and Georgia had some success doing that, and what ND will do is drive and then find very good shooters.

Still think Kentucky is way too big and physical, and Notre Dame's style plays into our hands. We'll not be able to keep them below 70, but I don't think they can keep us below us. I see this as a very similar game to the Indiana Sweet Sixteen game from 2012.

        Notre Dame 72
        Kentucky 81

With Towns and WCS, I am surprised we havent seen a 3-2 zone this year. This sure could be a good game for it if we ever practiced it.

For sure. I see this as another no problem game for the Cats.

I see ND hanging for about 10 minutes or so and then that's it. UK is so mentally focused right now. The mental maturity and composure of this team is impressive.

I agree we'll be in the low 80's, but I don't believe ND sees 70.

ND is legit. Their defense has been pretty poor all season but it improving (still pretty bad though). They can score and score fast. I read this morning that at one point in the game last night they scored 16 points in 2:40.

Outside of Auguste they have NO size at all. But, Grant is a great player who may give us some issues. But, the size and depth of UK should be more than enough to win. Hope Aaron is ok and Devin can hit some threes. We can't/won't match their 3 point shooting but as long as we don't let them hit 10-11 of them we should be fine.

I think UK separates in the last 5-6 minutes and wins by 8-9.

Line just came out and UK is favored by 11.5

Notre Dame has built those stats against every team not named Kentucky. Looking at their game against UofL (picked it because UofL's defense of opponent's shooting is very good) UofL held them below their 3 pt average, but ND could play inside against UofL and shot 53%. Notre Dame's not going to have much of an inside game against UK and UK holds opponents to a lesser 3 pt percentage than did UofL.

Notre Dame ends up having a long night - at least for the remaining 30 minutes of the game.

Bingo. We tend to think solely about the other team and forget that they have to play against Kentucky.

Notre Dame is a good passing team and they look for the cutters for easy layups. Our BIGS will have to watch for this and no be out of position. Should be a decent game, but CATS prevail. 75-62.

Some media is already starting with the "UK may have letdown after blowout win" or "Will UK still be fired up to play" stuff....

Cats say they are on a mission.

File this in the "Kentucky will have trouble with WVU's press" drawer.

And it's a good thing. The more people who pick against us, the more angry this team gets. They read every bit of that stuff and so does Cal.
