MJ says it is a likely scenario that Mintz will come back for another season. Interesting, and a bit surprising news. I'll most certainly welcome him back.
Would be great. Probably my favorite player on the team.
In no just and sane world does he need to be a starter on a good team but as a backup playing 10-12 minutes a game, plus the fact that he'll be like 37 years old, would be awesome for next year's team.
I like Mintz a lot and he's one of the only guys--along with Allen, at times Toppin, sometimes Ware, and very occasionally Isaiah Jackson--who you can look out there and say that he looks like he's maxing out his ability.
I'd be all for Mintz coming back for next year. I have heard this was a possibility for a while as his focus is on coaching long term. He would provide some leadership and decent play. But, like Will said, it needs to be 15 minutes or less per game.
I have MAJOR concerns about next year's roster. Unless the expected mass exodus doesn't happen (very doubtful) and/or Cal lands a major recruit/transfer (also doubtful) I think next year's team is going to struggle in a big way. Not like this year's disaster but, not much better either. Fringe (maybe) NCAA tourney team right now on paper.

We don't know who will even be on the team, who's coming back, how they can improve, who we might get via transfer, etc.
Trying to figure out what next year's Kentucky basketball team might look like this year is a totally fruitless exercise. I actually think a case can be made that a team like this might help Kentucky next year because you could bring back experience in a way that Cal has never been able to. Or it might hurt, as everybody might just rush for the exits.
Impossible to say. I'd pump the brakes on any and all talk of next year. I would hope there will be some hard discussions about what the future of Kentucky basketball is from the head coach, and that's where any improvement will need to start.
^ Another thing: Cal is going to need to figure out if he has the fire he once had. If not, and if his tenacity for the game is where some of these problems lie, then you would hope he looks to move on. It's really hard to be successful here unless you're 100% in.
I thought Cal was fading a little coming in to last year when he talked publicly about how much energy he had, etc. If you have to tell the media you're full of energy, chances are you aren't full of energy.
But looking at what we do absolutely know about the roster and trying to go from there, a tandem of Tshiebwe and Collins up front is something to think about.
They lack that gamechanging guard, obviously, and guardplay drives the game so he has to find something at those positions that's a massive upgrade on what we have this season.
I sort of think we might see Skyy Clark, though you worry about his age a little. I've sort of wondered if Sallis moving off the board might be because Clark is becoming more of a possibility.
On the wing is where most of the questions lie. There are going to be literally hundreds of transfers available though so that's a possibility--and maybe more of a must than a possibility. You wish Kentucky didn't have to build teams like that but if the wings we have now leave, and there's a good possibility of that, then we'll have no choice.
I'd actually like to see Boston as a sophomore but who knows. Clarke's in the same boat.
What's the deal with Skyy Clark? I thought he was on board?
He's class of 2022.
I actually think Clark can be one of the best guards Cal has had. Electric, otherworldly type of player. De'Aaron Fox sort.
Problem is if you can keep these guards in their classes, it's best. You have to be a stone cold freak to step in on a re-class year and be a devastating point or lead guard at this level.
He could do it but it's not 100% ideal. I'd rather have Sallis as a bridge but that looks dicey right now.

Ah...I have stopped paying attention. Only so many things I can care about these days.
I was under the impression our recruiting class next year was looking strong.

UK has one freak in Daimion Collins and another potential one in Clark, but on the wings it's barren right now. Trouble is there's not a gamechanger at that position who's left in high school.
But the good news is that the transfer situation this year is going to look like the free agent market on steroids. There will be talent available, and a lot of it.

This is a good synopsis of those guys and I agree. The only thing Mintz does that bothers me is his propensity to have unforced turnovers. He drives in the teeth of the D a lot and turns it over. I still love his game. He's aggresive and twitchy. Something this team is missing. I hope he comes back.
