The Players Who Could Have Been...

KSR’s post about Tracy McGrady’s near commitment to Kentucky got me thinking about the other notable “what if’s” over the years. Who are some of the other big names who were (supposedly) coming to Kentucky but backed out for whatever reason?

Along with McGrady, Dirk is probably the most obvious. I’ve also heard Durant was practically begging Tubby to recruit him, but didn’t get the interest for whatever insane reason. Draymond was coming until Tubby left, and I want to say Jermaine O’Neal is on the list, too, but I won’t swear to that one.

    Who else you got?

A few that come to my mind - Darius Rice, Tyler Hansborough, Brandan Wright

Forgot about Hansbrough. Stayed away because Randolph came back, right?

I don't mean to hijack this thread but, as an aside, what do you all think about McGrady's comment about seeing all the UK players' Eddie Bauers?

I think it has more to do with his mom suddenly getting a high profile/high salary job at UNC offered to her,.

Ah. Wasn’t aware of that detail.

Dirk Nowitzki. I had read somewhere a long time ago that the reason Hansbrough didn't come here is because he never got a visit from Tubby. That was probably around the time that Tubby said Kentucky sells itself and he didn't have to visit everyone. Doh!

                    Two great choices.

If I remember correctly, Kemp was actually enrolled in school, but was dismissed after he was accused of trying to pawn some jewelry that had been reported stolen from Sean Sutton.

Shawn Kemp and Dirk are the two obvious choices (aside from T Mac).

It was actually one player (the one he stayed with) that had one of those cars. I remember those days on campus and the backetball parking lot was a mixed bad of really nice cars and POS cars.

Tracy made it sound as if every player on the team had one.

He may have thought that or he may be exaggerating to be cool. Either way, he's wrong.
