The Good, The Bad, The Ugly: Mississippi St. Edition

    The Good

    * Have a Day, E.J. So we got Good E.J. Montgomery last night, and he was really good. E.J. sort of reminds you of Skal: he wants so badly to play like a guard, but he's having to learn you can't do that for John Calipari. So he'll sort of have these games where you can see he wants to mix it up, then he'll revert to Guard E.J. and things go haywire. Last night he got his nose in pretty much everything, and if Kentucky wants to make any kind of noise in March we have to have that player.

    * Three and Gone. What else can be said about Nick Richards at this point? The guy has turned himself into an honest-to-God All-American candidate. It's crazy to behold. I actually think he should be more of a focus in the offense. His touch is out of this world, and he's going to be a first round draft pick.

    * The Stripe. Kentucky flat-out iced that game at the free throw line last night, with Richards and Quickley just draining shot after shot like they were messing around out in the back yard. I may or may not have mentioned this, but I personally shot free throws at Rupp recently. (It's a long story that involves my sister-in-law, a computer company, and an event said company hosted in Rupp while UK played South Carolina in Columbia.) Let me tell you: it ain't easy to stand out there and hit free throws, even in an empty arena. Kentucky was 31-36 (!) last night as a team, with Quickley shattering a UK record by going a cool 14-14 (!!). That's out of this world solid.

    * Scheme o' Glory. Reggie Perry came in as the frontrunner for the SEC POY award. He left Rupp looking dazed and confused over there, his eyes fixed on the middle distance as if he were contemplating his life decisions. The really good Calipari teams are all tough. They fight. They rebound. They scrap. This team has struggled in those facets of the game off and on this year, and last night they got some licks in. That has to be the way they play if they have any chance at a March run.

    * Comeback Kids. The Cats absolutely had to win that game last night after the meltdown at Auburn. Had to. They got it done.

    The Bad

    * Stumblin' to the Finish Line. Outside the free throws, the Cats played that last 4:00 about as bad as possible. Defensively they looked like they were basically letting the Dogs score, while offensively they were in the mode of killing 3/4 of the shot clock before attacking. I still don't like Cal's penchant for trying to bleed the game out when he has any semblance of a late lead, but it nets a W more often than not.

    * Between the Pipes. First we had "violent cuts." Then we had "drive the nail." Then it was the country song. Now it's "between the pipes," Jimmy Dykes' newest catchphrase. I love how goofy Jimmy is, but the phrases he comes up with are strange and disturbing.

    * The Bunch That Could Blow Nobody Out. Kentucky has a maddening thing where they get a 12 or 14 point lead, and instead of pushing it out to 20, it usually shrinks to 6 and then it's a game. That happened again last night, and one of the main reasons for that is...

    * Shot Maulers. Kentucky was a grisly 1-10 from the three-point line. It's really hard to blow people out in this game when you can't hit that three-pointer. Quickley had a really nice game, but was 1-6 from three. Each three he took could have kicked the door down and made what was a solid lead pretty much insurmountable. He missed every one. There are myriad reasons why this UK team has to fight with teams to put them away, but the shooting issues are front and center.

    The Ugly

    * Point of Regression. Ashton Hagans had another subpar game last night, and that's being polite. I think he's overthinking stuff right now, and when your point guard is in think mode rather than react mode he'll not be effective.

    * Short Bench. Kentucky's bench situation is suddenly a little fugly, what with the Dragon gone off to Westeros and Juzang and Brooks being wildcards. Speaking of Juzang and Brooks: both hardly registered in that one last night, and while that was partly because of E.J. playing well, it is a little concerning when you only have six capable players, and the sixth man is only effective some of the time. There's a reason why after the game there was talk of Dontaie Allen playing. This team is an injury away from being in a real mess, and it looked for a moment like Sestina may have suffered an injury last night. (Turned out to be a false alarm, thankfully.)

    * The Screamer. Cal screamed at people for 40 minutes last night. The refs, the players, anybody in his vicinity. I guess he thought he needed to just stand over there and yell like a madman (it culminated in a really bad technical foul in the last couple of minutes that thankfully didn't hurt us), but at some point it'd be nice if he'd chill just a tad. I mean, I get it in some ways. I can yell at the TV pretty good in my living room. But you wonder sometimes if he's not interfering with the action on the floor rather than facilitating it. I just don't understand 40 minutes of constant wailing from the coach. At some point you might need to chill and let them figure a couple of things out.

EJ played like a man possessed last night. Watching guys like Nick and EJ find their confidence is truly one of the great joys of being a UK fan.

Thanks for doing this Will - know you are swamped!

Last night's game was a pretty good summary of the season for this team. Look awesome, look terrible, huge lead, blow the huge lead, don't extend the lead, struggle for long stretches, hit free throws, stall ball, etc...all wrapped up into one game. The win was hugely important but this team makes nothing easy nor do they make it look pretty.

Re: Cal and his yelling. I recently spoke to someone in Lexington close to the program. He said Cal has been working on this very thing. However, he also said he is told that this is the most frustrating and discouraging season for Cal since he has been at UK. From the recruiting misses to the ugly losses to Whitney leaving plus the down year in college basketball it has been a "disappointment and is wearing on him".

I'm sure this season has been tough. You don't have a player leave all of a sudden in January and not have that affect the entire team and coaching staff. And I'm sure the problems didn't just crop up once Whitney decided to leave. There had probably been stuff brewing for weeks.

Through it all Kentucky is probably about where I thought they would be when I looked at the roster back in the summer. Didn't think they'd lose to Evansville obviously, but thought Texas Tech would get us. Thought Arkansas might get us.

So record-wise, it pretty much lines up. When he put the roster together I thought this would be an 8-10 loss type of team, 8 or 9 seed, and would have to fight to get to the second weekend. The recruiting misses and the defections--particularly that of Keldon Johnson--made it so.

Then you had Whitney being a complete bust, and E.J. being erratic, and Hagans' offense not really progressing. But to offset that, you have Nick Richards turning into a star, Quickley being one of the most-improved players of the Cal era, and Maxey being electric at times to give you that NBA juice.

So it all sort of settles back to where I kind of thought with this team. I think if they could work themselves up into a top 3 SEC finish and a top 6 or 7 seed, they might be able to make a push in the tournament. This is a pretty balanced team, and I like that about them. But they play with fire every game because they don't have a ton of talent and they still have at least two guys who just don't show up pretty much every game.

This is one of those teams that just has to grind. No choice. The closest comparison for that kind of team in the Cal era would probably be the Ulis/Murray team and the Shai/Knox team. All three of these teams just had to win ugly. You've got no choice when you have talent discrepancies like this.

Pretty much agree with all you said here Will.

Was just looking back at my text messages with this guy. One other thing he mentioned that I did not include above was Cal's frustration with Maxey. While Maxey has been good (to very good sometimes), Cal thought Maxey was going to be a 20+ ppg, SEC player of the year type guy. Obviously that hasn't been the case.

Speaking of Hagans: Many of his turnovers are unforced but he is still playing pretty good defense.

Not a good enough shooter to be at 20+.

He plays with a lot of electricity though, and he's a pretty well-balanced player. Just looking at it from the outside, I can live with what he's brought for the most part.

We can say the same thing about this team that anybody who follows a team in the middle-to-back part of the top 25 can say: Man, I wish they'd all click at the same time. Sometimes it'll be Hagans. Sometimes Quickley. Then Maxey will step up. But he can't get them all going at once except in little short stretches. Only Richards has been rock solid consistent, and even he took a step back at Auburn.

On one hand that gives you some hope that maybe all six who play can get on the same page in March. On the other hand, we haven't seen that yet and it's February 5th. So it's probably going to hold that this team will look very similar to this until the end, and as fans we just have to hope that they can catch some breaks.

I just looked at the play where they called basket interference on Richards followed by the T on Cal. While I couldn't tell for sure if the call on Richards was correct, I don't think Cal's T was connected to it. Cal was almost to mid court coaching and way out of the coaching box and IMO that's why he got his T. He didn't look like he was yelling at the officials.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Will. All very good insight and analysis.

We played pretty well, but I also believe we were very fortunate Miss St missed some easy shots that could have possibly changed this game. How many put backs did Perry miss that should have fallen? We played good defense, but I feel fortunate that the poor play appeared to get into some of the Bulldogs players heads.

I agree with your comments on Jimmy's new phrases

However, you missed one of the strangest ones I've heard him say. "Richards doesn't Tilt the floor".

Agree, MSU missed some very easy shots.

However, UK had about 4-5 wide open 3s that would have put the game away and probably resulted in this being a 15-20 point game and we missed them all. So, it goes both ways.

A good win but two things from last night still really concern me about this UK. Three point shooting and the number of offensive rebounds we allow. Both are a big problem against a good team.

I agree, but unfortunately it's just who we are. Those aren't things that are going to shore up in a month.

This teams DNA is flawed. The good news is that there aren't very many teams who dont have flaws in their DNA. We shall see.

Loving what EJ has been bringing to the court lately. Just watch his body language. Last night he was smiling and was fully engaged. His defense has been better over the last few games. I thought after he missed his (our) first two shots last night he would disappear but he kept at it and had his best game as a Cat.

Vandy had two guys put up over 30 points....almost broke the century mark on them.

If we play even close to like we did against them in Rupp we will get ran out of that awful gymnasium next week.

When March Madness officially starts, we have a team who could flop out in the 1st round or a team that can win 6 and hang a banner. As crazy as that sounds, anything is possible but we have witnessed some great halves and stretches of game where our team is as dominate as anyone, especially if we are hitting shots. I do agree that once we get a lead we get lazy or Cal call' off the Cats and we let teams climb back in but if we can tidy that up and stay out of foul trouble, think we will be good.

With that being said, we could go down to Tn. and lose on Saturday, never know with this bunch, im just ready for the big dance to begin...
