The only time that's happened to me in the Cal era was during the 2013 season, but I admit I've felt it a little this year. Michigan St. got me pretty pumped obviously but really I've been hesitant about this team from when they were assembled. It's odd that everything--the two exhibitions, the other regular season games--has been bad except Michigan St. That's really weird.

It helps that my son's high school basketball season just started so God knows I'm going to get enough b'ball in my life this year. But it's not the same when the Cats are mediocre. It's a real bummer and makes me just not want to turn on the TV at all during the week to watch other games. When UK is powerful I watch virtually every night. There are times college basketball is the only thing I watch on TV during the winter months.
I am in the same boat but it also goes a little deeper than that for me. Maybe i am older now and something has changed, i don't know, i am just getting to the point that i do not want to give away my time to watch sports in general. Back in the day i would not miss a Dodger, Celtic, 49er or Kentucky game, now i have to make myself watch a full game with the exception of Kentucky basketball.

Anyways, what bothers me the most about Kentucky basketball this time of the year is i get so tired of having to figure it all out again while other teams just look a lot more polished early on, it's really wears on me and that's why i still call it junk basketball. Yes i get it and i know that usually it works itself out but it's just hard watching sometimes....

I've started thinking about this differently since I had kids. I used to get really wrapped up in this stuff - a few years ago a loss like Evansville woulda put me in a foul mood for a week. Since having kids it's just put things into perspective that it's all just a game - I love UK and the Commonwealth but at the end of the day, who I am as a person isn't tied to this.

The other thing is that I want to be able to enjoy this with my son and daughter in a few years when they're big enough to understand what's going on. If they see me in a foul mood every time we lose a game, why would they want to be part of it?

Great post. To be honest, we have to keep in mind our team is just kids, 18-22 year olds whom i am twice the age and those kids absolutely play no part in my well being at all. Now if they want to start sending me a check once they go pro, then that's another story, same for the pro teams, i do not idolize none of these players including our coach....

I still get in a pretty foul mood. But I also get really excited when the team wins.

There was a discussion here once about "pride." A poster pointed out how stupid it was to feel pride when UK wins.

And that is stupid. Adults shouldn't be so tied to games that we feel pride when random college kids we have never met and will never meet when a sports game.

But it is what it is. I do feel something like pride. It only serves to reason that I'd feel something like shame when they lose.

With this particular team I've not been as down because I sort of expected something like this. Don't think he did a good job with the roster. Last year when they looked so bad I was more down because it came as more of a shock. Last year was built to win; this year is built to...well, I'm not sure what they're built like but the structure is pretty wobbly.

This year is built to install some pieces for next year.

With all that being said, come game day against Louisville i will be as jacked up as ever. My Kentucky basketball now just resolves around stumbling into March hoping we can win 6 but without a lot of expectations throughout the year. However a month ago i boasted this was our year and this team would be the one and for one game i was feeling pretty good but then boom, here came the reality of wishful thinking....

Great post! I also used to get so excited about a Kentucky Basketball game and win or lose, I was so proud to be a part of each game. Then I began my officiating career, and became the manager of The Kentucky Bourbons. Ever since, I'm still proud to be a Kentucky Fan,but when they lose or look bad, I can still go to sleep. My perspective on life has changed and that's because of several relationships. The first is my relationship with God, then my wife and our kids. Now that I have 9 Grandchildren, my perspective has changed even more. Games are just that, games and there is much more to life.

I still get as high or low for every game. Only difference is I move on much quicker than I used to. Don't stay as excited and don't stay as annoyed as long as I did 5-10 years ago.

I can't het into any of the weekday games as it interferes with my work schedule. I used to dvr those games but haven't in a while. I just can't stand the sight of bad basketball anymore. I can't stand watching players who can't shoot, or block out, or rebound, or pass. Sure, we turn it on at the end of the year and my reactions have always been, "Where has this been?". It's just a different game anymore and Cal's model has wore on me. Still a massive fan and I really get into games that I can watch, it's just that after wins or losses, it doesn't carry over anymore to the following days. Cal has done that to me. Hard to truly get on board with guys who will only be here one season. I could care less what ANY of our guys do once they go to the NBA.

I have mellowed out a lot..guess that is getting older....I love when we win and hate when we lose but I don't let the losses linger with me anymore....I have 3 beautiful grandchildren who light up my world and I see their faces everyday....that's what it is all about

Whoa, just read on KSR that the turnstile count for the Utah Valley game was in the 12k range, with Rupp's new capacity at 20,150. Ouch!
