I wasn't paying a lot of attention, but I think I heard on WHAS radio yesterday that Matt Jones had been fired from something and it was because of a book or something he said about someone running for a political office, and they got him fired. Is he still on KSR?

Matt was fired from his TV show "Hey Kentucky." KYT claims that they fired him because of his book "Mitch, Please" that he is currently writing. Matt (and other sources) allege that Amy McGrath's campaign manager forced KYT's hand and had him fired from his own show. The latter makes the most sense.
In any event, I fully expect Matt to announce his Senate campaign shortly. KSR is still on radio, but he will obviously not be allowed to air the show if he decides to run. He claims that he and the gang will continue doing their show via podcast until election, if that is the case. -

But yeah, Matt was initially taken off the air while he was deciding whether to run for the Senate against Mitch McConnell. WLEX claims that him writing the book was the reasoning, though Jones claims the station knew about it two months ago. He also states that he decided to write the book at a time when he thought he was definitely not running. Something doesn't add up here with those two facts.
But, McGrath's decision to force the envelope was stupid and shortsighted.
And, FYI, there's a thread about this in the political forum if you're looking for more on it.

I think Jones is entertaining enough, but he is definitely a basketball man and a guy that loves to get on Louisville fan nerves more than really breaking any news.
he isn't comfortable with football. He likes to stir a little controversy whether it's Macy's words or this week Hackers comments.
not really someone I'd listen to for solid takes or ideas.
BUT.....without him the show likely folds. He has a pretty big following.Comment

I haven't had much use for Jones after the way he lead WCN on about a possible merger with another site he was connected too, and then turning his back on us.John 3:3

I vaguely remember Jones posting here every now and then but I never knew any behind the scenes stuff.
I get why why people don’t like Jones. I am slightly more than lukewarm on him, but I really like the KSR site and the radio show. I am glad it exists and I like the silliness as an alternative to the more Colin Cowherd style sports radio hosts. I am glad it exists for the UK fan base, and I believe Jones is sincere his love of the commonwealth and the fans who live here.
I also like that he irritates Louisville fans.Comment

he is a less arrogant and irritating version of a guy named Mark Maggard that used to be God's gift to sports internet.Comment

Maggard was just a guy. He also happened to be almost spectacularly arrogant, and in that way he was different than virtually everybody else I've seen on these boards. The only person who comes close is probably windycatz/Smokey Pearl.
I don't know Jones other than the sports (basketball) stuff, which I think he's very good at. I don't pay much attention to football outside of the season so I'm not sure how good he is with that, but he's great with UK basketball and I think gets at UK's issues sometimes better than former players do.
As for our issues with him in the past, I can't really remember what those were. I think the merger Lighthouse mentions was actually going to happen and we chose to nix it at the end, but I could be wrong. I do remember going to Jones and personally asking him to help us with fundraising, and he declined. I believe Matt Colvin did the same more than once. I'm sure Rick and Sean went to him as well.
He's built a very popular thing with KSR and I can't hate on him for that. I hope he runs.

I never asked for help with fundraising. I did ask for the occasional "mention" to help with awareness of our site when we first started to see an honest decline in traffic. The prior mergers/relationships came up multiple times in the past, to varying degrees, and included involvement of the tailgates at times. And that's all I care to detail about that on a public site where Matt doesn't visit anymore, and wouldn't be able to defend himself or even recount his side of it.
It's been a wild and eventful 13+ (?) years for KSR, and a ton of work and man hours went into that. A TON of risk as well. At the end of the day what he has done is unique and could lead to manufacturing a celebrity that is powerful enough for a never-held-office-before SE Kentuckian to give one of DC's most powerful men and incumbent Senators an actual scare on his home turf. What if he WON?
UK Basketball primarily but also UK sports as a whole allowed a guy from Middlesboro to do that. Folks...that's crazy if you stop to ponder it. If Ritchie Farmer wasn't a dead beat on the personal side of things he could have become governor.
Calipari said it right..."WE People" are crazy!Comment

Lol....I think some take Jones a little too seriously.....there was the days (weeks) long thing about the kid that left for Miami committing to UK for the third time and forever drawn out carrots on the stick about UK basketball commits......which usually turn out to be a bit less reliable than what we read on the boards. Didn't know about the lead on about a site merger.

This is flat out untrue. At least with the example, you used. He is paid to talk about UK news and controversy is UK news. As for Hacker, he had Hacker on the show the next day to give him a chance to clarify and explain his comments. The clear goal was smoothing the controversy.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that...
