Kenny Payne on Tyler Herro: He's Not Just "A White Kid That Can Shoot"

Payne's absolutely right. Herro is one of the better all-around players we've had in the Calipari era.

If he stayed two years the guy would torch some UK records IMO. He could be just as good as Tyler Ulis was as a sophomore because he's that kind of player.

He's one of my favorite Cats of the last 20 years. Absolutely love how fearless he is.

    Love Tyler Herro's game.

But honest question: has there ever been a UK player that misses more shots by clanking them off the back of the rim? They either torch the net or they clank off the back. No in betweens.

PJ Washington misses a bunch off the back rim too.

Seems like there was a game where Herro was short on everything. Alabama, maybe. But you're right: 90% of his misses are off the heel.

But that's sort of true for every player. If they miss it's usually hard because you're taught to get the ball up there when you shoot. Leaving it short shouldn't happen a whole lot unless the player is drifting or fading away or something.

Watch Tylers defense. He has a knack for playing the passing lanes. He was doing it before Hagans came on the scene vs UNC. He never stands around either. He is always moving. He is gonna be really good. He reminds me of Luke Kennard but a much better defender.

I think he might come back but this year's draft is seriously weak after you get past the first few picks. If Kentucky made a deep run and he had a good showing in March then I could see him putting his name in. His size and how hard he plays is a major plus. How he shoots also fits right in with today's NBA, where they essentially take threes every trip down.

I think PJ Washington could be a lottery pick when it all shakes out. That's partly about how versatile he is but it also has to do with how soft this draft is.

I like Herro a lot and if he is here next year (like he should be) he will be an All-American.

If he goes to the NBA he will get destroyed, IMO. He is the exact player that EVERY other school gets to return for a second (or third) season. UK/Cal need to get him to do the same at UK now.

He probably should come back but if Landry Shamet and Alonzo Trier can have good rookie years then Herro won't get destroyed.

I've seen no real weakness in his game outside of maybe entering the ball to the post. I tend to think he'll be a longtime pro and I like him as well as anybody we have when you project him to the NBA with the exception of maybe Hagans.

He's due for an "on" night and when he does he's going to blow some team up.

                      Love Herro's game..

On a side note staying in New Orleans and just bumped into J. Murray and T. Lyles, great conversation, two fine young men. Had to ask Murray why he torched my Celtics earlier in the year😆😆

Edit.. Also talked to Gary Harris, the Gary Harris that played guard at Michigan State, told him i hated it when he touched the ball, he can shoot lights out..

On a final note, talk about the irony of what i am about to say. Anyone here should know i am a huge Celtics fan and if you didn't know, Anthony Davis is my favorite player. It is also well knows that Danny Ainge has had a man crush on Anthony Davis for 5 years and has done everything possible to stockpile picks and young players in order to obtain Davis and make him a Celtic including making a deal for K. Irving to attract players like Davis and others. The irony of all this is that i actually bumped into I. Thomas and said hey, thank you for what you did and sorry about the trade and as a Celtic fan, i salute you, my exact words. Now there is the report from Anthony Davis Sr. that he does not want his son playing for Boston because of what they did to Thomas and the fact he was traded for K. Irving when gave it all on a bad hip and rushed back after his sisters funeral to play a playoff game, it's a mess. As a Celtics fan, i say we pass on Davis, he will leave in 2020 anyways to join Lebron in L.A., expect Cousins to sign there as well, so much for my dream come true...
