The Good, The Bad, Brad Calipari's Turtleneck: Kansas Edition

    The Good

    * A Double Double for You, a Double Double for You, and a Double Double for You. Three double doubles last night. Last time that happened it was three guys you may have heard of: Wall, Cousins, and Patterson. Anytime you're in the company of those guys you've had a good night, and UK had some dudes show out last night. That's how you beat top 10 teams.

    * Glass Men. Kentucky owned the boards last night, and it started in the first couple of minutes. Travis got us going and Washington and Johnson more than held their own. Even when we couldn't hit a shot in the first five minutes we were just playing much harder than they were. Running down every loose ball. Owning the paint. It was a man's game, as the cliche goes, and we had more of them.

    * Washington Crossing. PJ was unreal in that second half, basically putting on the Kansas St. mask and doing everything imaginable for the Cats. That's the kind of game that could put him in the lottery. Now, in true PJ fashion we might see a severe regression next game. But if he can play with that effort every night I don't think there are too many players in college basketball better than he is.

    * Herro Ball-Line Defense. Tyler Herro couldn't find his shot last night, firing everything off the heel of the rim, but man did he get after it defensively. The guy locked down their best perimeter scorer and just wouldn't let him breathe. On a couple of plays I thought Vick looked like he just wanted to go over and sit down. Herro was a blanket defensively and that was a huge part of how we won that game.

    * Welcome Back, Rupp. From all accounts Rupp Arena was magical last night, and that was good to see. Because for the most part this season it's been a slog: mediocre opponents, empty seats, bored fans. Part of this is the team hasn't been consistent, but I think it's a symptom of sports as a whole. People would just rather sit on their couch and watch. But trust me, for games like that there's nothing better than being in the arena and feeling the electricity.

    * The Streak. When people looked at the schedule over the summer they circled this stretch we just went through. On paper it looked brutal, the kind of run that Kentucky easily could have stumbled badly in. But the Cats didn't stumble at all, they owned that streak, winning all three and positioning themselves right back where we were before...

    * The Duke Game. So it's almost three months since the nightmare in Chicago. It's taken that long for this team to finally come full circle and figure out who we are. Much of this is due to Ashton Hagans, who almost couldn't be on the floor in the Duke game. He's suddenly become one of the nation's point guards. But you also have Tyler Herro becoming a solid player and PJ Washington playing like he's capable of, and all of a sudden you're looking at a team that's right there in the discussion for a 1 seed. Almost nobody in America has the resume Kentucky does at this point and you've got to wonder would we have that resume without the Duke game? Sometimes you need to get punched in the mouth to understand who you are.

    The Bad

    * First Half Woes. Kentucky's shooting in the first half was brutal. It was clear to me in the first two or three minutes that we were the tougher team, but because of the avalanche o' clanks we couldn't pull away. It was only when a couple of those finally went down in the second half that we could assert ourselves as a (far, IMO) superior team to Kansas.

    * Camera Angles from Hell. I've never been a fan of ESPN's avant garde filmmaking during games. The camera they use that moves on a wire above the court, the split screen stuff (gag), that weird phone camera the student was using...to me all that takes away from watching the game rather than enhances it. I'm of the mind that we should get forty minutes of action on one camera without seeing anything but the players on the court.

    * Everything's a Flagrant 1. So there was another hook and hold late in the game last night. Another video review. Another ridiculous delay for a play that was essentially just two guys fighting for the ball. I'm convinced the officials got a memo about three weeks ago regarding the hook and hold, because I didn't see it at all early in the season. The last three weeks I've seen it in almost every game I've watched. It just should not be happening and it's awful for the spectator trying to enjoy these games.

    * Dedric Man Walking. This isn't a bad necessarily, but we could do nothing with Dedric Lawson last night. That guy is a game-destroyer. His skill in the paint is truly impressive, and when you think he's going to try to work you in the paint he shoots 17-foot fadeaways. Outside Zion and Barrett he's the best individual player I've seen this season.

Another good: Nick Richards. I believe he had five blocks. If he can continue to give a productive ten minutes a game it will elevate us even more. We don't need him to score, just grab a few rebounds and don't be a defensive liability. Last night I thought he was incredible.

Brad Calipari's turtleneck was a thing of beauty. My man could've backed up any number of early 90s R&B groups with that fit.

This was a much needed win for the program, as we had slipped both in record and in perception as compared to the company of basketball elite. Luckily the Cats rose for the opportunity. I think with Azubuike this game might have looked different but of course we will never know.

This also was the first time in a while that I have gotten to sit down and watch a whole game. I like the high-low pattern that Washington and Travis have established. But dang if Reid can’t shoot over an opponents length...it’s as though he becomes 6’-2” and has a blanket draped over his eyes. Washington in the other hand does not have this problem, and while he’s no Terrence Jones, his baseline drive for a dunk was very impressive. Also, he hit ft’s.

Ashton Hagans has a swagger right now that is important going forward. I think we can beat UT once this regular season but we have to have Johnson/Herro hitting shots that they clanked last night. Richards’ blocks can be huge for our team, especially when you look at how we defend the drive.

I hope we can retain Quickley and Montgomery, as well as Herro. It would be crucial for us going forward, but also unprecedented lately given how many guys transfer outta here.

With Azubuike and De Sousa I think Kansas is the #1 team. Better than Duke. That's a seriously good frontcourt and we don't dominate them like we did last night if those guys are in there.

But it's hard to feel sorry for a program like Kansas given what we know they did to get some of these guys in their program.

The Cats did the little things to bring home the win last night. Herro's defense has been overlooked this season but that's changing now. He locked down the streaky Vick last night. I have watched KU games where Vick is just a fearless lights out shooter. Herro frustrated him to no end last night and it was beautiful.

Those three double doubles last night was awesome. Will brought it up that that was the first time since 2010 and I'd like to know when it happened before that. Just kind of a rare stat you never hear of.

Cal's teams notoriously turn it on in February but this group is doing it right now. We still have a lot of room for improvement and that can be a scary thing for the rest of college basketball. It can not be understated the importance of Reid Travis and the leadership he brings to our team. A grown man doing grown man things.

PJ is locked in right now. We have all pulled our hair out over his inconsistencies. He is starting show how good he can be over these last few games and he can be even better. Hopefully he continues it this week in our two road games.

Hagans continues to get better each game. That step back jumper from the top of the key was a thing of beauty and shows how deadly he is when he can hit the jumper. He also had a corner three last night. He has a nice looking shot. He had a pass first reputation in high school but he will need a jumper to truly take off. We are starting to see that a bit now. This dude is the real deal. He had a pass against MSU I believe to PJ in the post that went over looked. It was a no look bounce pass that he threw between two defenders. Just an unreal assist that brought me out of my seat. I LOVE this Cat!

No bench points last night but the guys did the little things that were huge. Obviously Nick's five blocks were great but EJ had a MONSTER play. After a PJ missed FT EJ hussled for the rebound and fed PJ cutting in the lane for the score. We were only up by two until that play. It was a huge play. That guy is gonna be good once he gets it.

I agree about PJ... If he would play with that energy all year long, he would be a different player altogether. Richards had another solid outing during his time in the game and was playing with energy. If he can stay on the floor in bunches and not get lost, he brings that fear of a shoot blocker into the game. Speaking of EJ --- I'm not sure how many saw it but he also played some solid D and at one point, he had a great defensive play where he caused the Kansas player to over-shoot trying to avoid a block.

This team is starting to get things going. Haskins again is the key. IF that dude could hit 3s and a basic pull-up at the free throw line consistently, he would average 20pts a game easy. His fire, energy, and trash talking that he does is fun to watch as well. It's contained and not over the top.

Johnson - I thought defensively, he was absolutely terrible. So many times that his guy would just go around him or he would lose track of his guy. His D is on par with the NBA.

With the wire cam, I thought someone had slipped lsd in my drink and I was floating away trying to catch a last few glimpses of the game before I left earth. They should stop that.

Next time you feel like that, listen to the Beatles' album "Sgt. Pepper" in reverse. It's supposed to help with stuff like that.

Hero may have played some defense but he shot the ball horribly in situations where we needed a bucket and made some terrible turnovers that could have hurt us as well I realize he is this years great white hope but come on people Saturday was not a good game for him at all He plays that way in a March game and we

Anytime you play defense like that it's going to hurt your offense. Defense at that level tends to wear your legs out.

He had 3 turnovers in 38 minutes but he's getting a ton of touches. He's the first touch in most of our offensive sets so he's keying the ball in a lot. Three turnovers isn't abysmal. He did have the one really bad one in the last couple of minutes that was totally unnecessary.

Will I get that he played good defense but in a game where we aren’t dominant down low the coming games at UT for example ,his inability to consistently hit wide open shots will hurt us. Our guard play is what MUST improve rspecially it’s shooting if we are to have a realistic shot at challenging for a title and frankly it isn’t there yet

You must have been watching a different game than the rest of us. Hagans had 4 turnovers and played less minutes than Herro. I'll take that effort from him in March. And where did you see anybody here talk about a great white hope? Please!
