    Karl Hess Strikes Again

This time his target was none other than Scott Padgett.

Amazing that Karl Hess finds work as a referee in the NCAA.

Is there any governing body over officials I’m guessing there is, but obviously it is as ineffective w everything else the NCAA does Do coaches have no recourse against this horses rear end

And nothing will happen because there is no accountability within NCAA regarding officiating. They do what they want, how they want because they know nothing will happen.

NCAA officials (especially basketball) have to be among the worst at their jobs of any profession I have ever seen. The majority are old, overweight, out of shape attention who are in no way capable of keeping up with today's game.

First and foremost, I would never condone the action Hess took in the game mentioned, or in any of the other episodes he has been involved in. Many times in my Officials evaluations, I have mentioned how I think Hess should retire, mainly because he has so much trouble keeping up.

However, I must call attention to comments made by the posters directly above this one and particularly the uninformed one above. The very fact that Hess was dismissed by the ACC is proof that there is a governing body over the officials. Also, in last years NCAA tournament, the 3 on court officials and the stand by, were suspended for the remainder of the tournament for allowing the wrong shooter to shoot FT's. Again, as I've stated before, every Conference has a supervisor who attends games reviews every game film. Add to that, as far as i know every NCAA D1 game has 2 on site Evaluators who summit their report. At Rupp, they set on each end, at a table in the endzone. There is truth in the statement that fans won't know when disciplinary action is taken because of obvious reasons. But disciplinary action happens several times during a season.

Usually statements made about the abilities, honesty and physicality of today's officials, are made by a fan who has never been on the court with a stripped shirt and whistle on, and especially an NCAA game. So they are an expert because of setting in the stands where they have the worst view of what an official is trained to see. There is a comraderie amongst officials because when they are on the court they are a team that's opposed by every other person in the arena. And, if a person making the above type observations has been an official at some level, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

I am a retired NCAA D!! official, and i'm proud of the job I did, and those doing it now. Was I, or any of them, perfect? Certainly not! But we hold our heads high.

Edit. The posters referred to doesn't include justford.

We were involved in a freshmen game two or three weeks ago that had an insane ending.

Officials were very bad. They were just wildly inconsistent. My son almost murdered a kid on one play--no foul. Yet they called a deluge of touch fouls. And so on. It was just a poorly called game.

It ended when one of the officials decided to call a loose-ball foul with 2 seconds left in a tie game. Kid went to the line, hit one, game over and we got beat.

I was still steaming when I saw the refs coming into the parking lot afterward. I mentioned the foul call; I said, "You can't call the foul in that situation." The guy smiled and said, "No, no, no. The kid got into him pretty good." (He didn't. The kid who got the foul on him weighs about 80 pounds soaking wet.) But regardless, we did stand out and talk for about five minutes. Both officials were very complimentary of my son, and we laughed and joked about the heckling in the stands. One of the officials told me the heckling made it fun.

I tend to think basketball is a very hard game to officiate because there's so much happening on virtually every play. A couple of interesting things about this game I'm talking about, though: one, the opposing school (Moore) would send an assistant to talk to the refs during timeouts. That had to have been intentional and it seemed to work. Also, one of the officials told me after the game that he was a grad of my son's school; he said, "I have to work hard to not be biased toward my alma mater, and I end up being biased the other way." He said it with a laugh but I thought it was interesting.

I think there are all kinds of small biases that show up during games that officials probably don't even realize they're falling victim to. The charge/block call on the D1 level is a very interesting call because it seems like rather than the rule, what's often rewarded there is the supposed hustle or scrap of the kid taking the charge. The home arena seems to come into play as well. I think there's been a move--particularly with regard to the monitor--to highlight the officials more than ever before. Refs will often look at the monitor and then go and tell the TV crew what the call was. All of this serves to bring the officials out more and make them more of a focus. I just don't think that's unintentional.

Will, I think you know my opposition to the use of the monitor. That's because of my old school training. I didn't have to use the monitor, and I made it just fine. Would it have made a difference? Maybe, but I had to stand on what I saw and go with it. It takes away from the game and is a crutch to some.

I wish I had bee at the game you reference and could give my evaluation of those officials. I enjoy going to MS games because the officials are new and they are willing to listen to constructive criticism. On the HS level, they try hard to not have officials who went to a school or is kin to a player, not possible in a MS game.

So if all these safeguards work as they should how is Hess still working?

Cameron Mills said on his pregame show this morning that the whole 98 team will be getting those t shirts.
