A Few Words on Duke vs. Kentucky

I know we're a little less than three months away from this game, but watching the Bahamas games had to get you thinking about how the 2018/2019 season is going to open up.

Kentucky should be 10 points or so better than Duke. We have more returning experience for one, and I really don't think the recruiting classes are all that far apart.

With Duke a lot's going to come down to how much their centers have improved. When things go bad for Duke, it's usually because of team defense, or they have a disproportionate amount of perimeter players and not much inside. (Duke went for years and years in the post-Laettner/pre-Battier era where K just wasn't recruiting any game-changing bigs.) Javin DeLaurier and Marques Bolden have always been back-ups in the past; this year one of them is going to have to take the mantle as a starter, and both are going to probably log a lot of minutes. Their stats last year were eerily identical, so it's impossible to say which one will get the nod. But Kentucky should have a noted advantage at the center spot assuming Travis's size isn't an issue.

Duke is also going to go as its best player goes, and this season it will be Canadian superstar R.J. Barrett. Barrett will most assuredly be an All-American, and he's a guy who has been known in high school for having these electric, almost otherworldly games. Kentucky will have to keep him from getting 30+, and with the stage as big as it's going to be for that game you know he'll be amped to try and build his brand.

Another guy for Duke that I like is sophomore Alex O'Connell. I think he could have a big year for Duke. He only had 22 makes from three last year, but his percentage was sort of staggering. He's kind of their version of Tyler Herro, and that will be a good battle.

Offensively Duke doesn't appear to have the kind of attack that they usually have. Coach K has been big on the drive-and-kick system for almost 20 years, but I'm not sure Duke has the team shooting to play that way. What they're going to be is more athletic, with Williamson, Reddish, and of course Barrett being more of the floor-runner types that you usually see at a place like Kentucky. If our guys aren't getting back in transition Duke could make life tough, because Zion Williamson is a guy who is going to be hard to handle when he gets a head of steam.

Kentucky as we've seen is going to have a lot of weapons. Significantly more, IMO, than Duke. But as far as top-end talent, Kentucky doesn't have an R.J. Barrett. So as always in these marquee November match-ups, it's going to be a fight.

I expect to see Kentucky win this game sort've like we did in the Murray/Ulis year. 15 point outcome, but a comfortable lead the entire game.

I look at Duke's roster and see a very topheavy situation, and not a whole lot of balance.

We have a 12-9 record against Duke historically. 1-1 in the Calipari era, with both games looking almost identical except with different outcomes.

Strangely Kentucky is 2-7 in our last 9 meetings against Duke.

As Tim Duncan, Marcus Camby, and numerous others found out: there is strength in numbers. Coach K better have Zion and Cam Reddish is fantastic shape for this game.

As for Barrett, he’ll get another taste of Johnson. I think we can slow him down a smidge.

Another odd thing about Duke: who's their back-up point guard?

I guess they may try freshmen Jordan Goldwire there, but they don't really have a point guard behind Tre Jones. That will be something to watch for Duke not only in our game but through the entire season. They're very thin at guard.

Duke's trip to Canada will be on ESPN+ this weekend. If anyone has that service and wants to report back on what they looked like please do.

According to Drew Franklin, RJ Barrett has been talking trash and saying they're going to kill us.

I think they just play Canadian college teams. Team Toronto doesn't look like they're on the schedule.

Duke will undoubtedly kill this competition. Unless one of these teams has a ringer, these games should get way out of hand.

But I think the Duke hype is good for our guys. It'll make them want that first game of the season even more. Any disrespect that Cal can use to get our team going is a good thing.

Those Canada games begin tonight, fwiw.

Hard to predict this game, about 8 kids will be on the floor at any time that have NEVER been on a stage like this in their lives Hard to guess how they will respond. If I was Cal I would bang on Barrett from the tip put our most physical defender on him and try to rough him up a bit, see how he responds As always the way the game is officiated will also be a major factor. If it is as tight as most early season contests usually are the deepest team will win. If Duke doesn't have the outside shooting this year that is their staple under K it will be interesting to see if K can adapt Playing them early should be to our advantage if f that is the case

Duke beat Ryerson 86-67. The big story was Zion Williamson, who had 21 in the first half and was 3-4 from three. If he can hit threes he might be an All-American, because he's going to do a lot of damage just based on his power alone. But I'm not convinced he can continue to shoot like that.

R.J. Barrett had 34, but was 2-8 from three. In what I think will be an ongoing problem for Duke, they got 8 total points from their center position. Marques Bolden did not score. Duke was also without star freshmen Tre Jones and Cam Reddish, who've been dealing with injuries. Reddish has been hurt for the better part of the last three months.

I would imagine Duke will play zone a lot this year. Not much depth to speak of, and the zone worked well for them last year.

A lot of length on the edges of that zone with Barrett and Reddish and O'Connell. But not as much athleticism at the top as they had last year. Tre Jones is probably a better straight-up basketball player than Trevon Duvall, but Duvall was an athlete who could pester the basketball. Easy to see why Duke's zone was relatively solid last season when you look at the personnel they had.

One of the people I hate most professionally is on faculty member at Ryerson. Not sure he cares about college basketball but it makes it difficult for me to know who to root for in these instances.

I was in agreement with you almost all the way through and then i read that bs about top end talent and Barrett lol lol lol. Well call me a little bias but i damn sure like K. Johnson and from what i saw out of him, this kid is explosive and to me he has that natural fight, that dog in him, better hope like hell he doesn't become a shooter that starts knocking down shots because then he becomes unguardable!!!!!!!....
