Cal Has Spent a Strange Amount of Time Talking About Parents This Season

In every press conference he talks about "enablers." Recently, due to the winning streak, his tone has been a little different; he seems to be gloating a little bit.

But regardless, I think it's clear that this hasn't been the easiest season. Think there's been a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes.

If you'll remember, Cal talked at length after the '09-'10 season about stuff that had happened with parents and relatives and claimed that he would never allow it to go on again. I've heard him talking about it here and there over the intervening years, but not like this season.

From what I've read/heard, Vanderbilt's parents were a big part of the chorus advising him to not play.

Probably not just parents involved. These kids often seem to have a herd trying to advise them.

Because the herd lives vicariously/ wants to get paid.

I"m sure it getting harder and harder not have those outside influences meddling. I really wonder sometimes why these coaches put up with all of this for so long.

I've thought about this a lot. You can work your ass off as a coach and do the right things and have a player's family decide to go rogue and accept something from an agent and everything's ruined, or you have a player's family urging him to do something that's not in the team's best interest.

I can empathize with these families if you see your kid hit the genetic lottery and you have a chance to get out of poverty, but it sucks if you're a coach.

Mike Pratt indicated as much weeks ago in an interview with Bob Valvano. Pratt said he called one of his contacts who's close to the AAU circuit where Vanderbilt grew up and there's a number of people in his ear, not just family.

Those same people will bleed these kids dry when they get into the NBA. The stuff that 30 for 30 stories are made of..................
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.
