Given Cal's ability to take his pick among blue chip recruits, I'm just not sure he would have taken a chance on Rondo over others. Over the years I've heard Cal talk again and again about players being 'coachable'. Tubby's style was a terrible fit for him, but Rondo struck me as the one of the least coachable players we've ever had here. Then again, Cal does enjoy a challenge.

I think Cal and Rondo would have been fine. R just wanted to win. (and probably run an offense) Tubby wanted to win and play grinder-ball, and stifle players, and ensure no fun....

I'm just glad Pitino preferred Telfair. Rondo simply fell into Tubby's lap. Even Tubby couldn't make a 4 yr player out if him.

I recall jumping up and proclaiming "fastest player since Iverson" after one if his open court moves.

If you remember Telfair and Rondo played here. There was a double header and Rondo and Eastern played the first game while Telfair played last game. There was about 3 minutes of warm up time left before game time when Telfair finally came out of the locker room. I knew then he would be a problem for Ricky. FWIW, I don't remember hearing anything about Rondo's bad attitude in HS. His HS coach is still his confidant.

There were all kinds of stories. IIRC he was suspended and I believe at one point thrown off the team.

That may have happened, but I don't remember it. His HS coach has always been a father figure for him. Can't remember his name either.

Probably thinking of Doug Bibby. That was at Eastern High. He played his senior year at Oak Hill.

Bibby is the coach I'm referring to. He connected with Rondo and has remained his confidant, and has a lot to do with his success. Although no one could coach the talent Rondo has, that is God given.
