I remember Chuck Hayes on the bench vs Michigan State in the Elite 8. Michigan State got the crucial rebound. Chuck would have gotten it done and gave UK the victory. Tubby did not want to roll the dice. He was a poor man's Dean Smith except Dean recruited better for sure.
Tubby wins that game though and we probably never see Billy G. Cal may have still happened later as I simply don't think Tubby liked this much spotlight. But who knows.Comment

Tubby got lazy and had crappy assistants (as opposed to the higher profile assistants Cal has). Can't get lazy at UK and expect to maintain. He left 2 years too late, IMO. And while I will defend (as will many of his players and Pitino himself) his job in 98 and the title, I feel strongly that the task got to big for him to maintain. He brought himself down, not the fans or the administration. He needed to leave. Glad he gave us 98. Glad we have someone else. Enough beating that dead horse for me.Comment

Chuck Hayes might have been short, lazy and not very gifted, but I would love to have him suit up tomorrow night and take care of our rebounds, and show Monk how to play defense.John 3:3

Chuck Hayes was the low post version of Alvin Sims. Maybe not the guard explosiveness but the power of a bull in the post position. Hayes knew how to position and use his body but most importantly, the heart of a champion which is something you can't put a recruiting number on, the intangibles....Comment

I've never seen anyone botch up a player of Rondo's caliber like Tubby Smith did. My god, can you imagine him under Calipari?
Rondo, for as gifted as he is, has never gotten along with his teammates. Even in the pros, he hasn't done will in a situation since maybe the early years with the Celtics.
That '06 team was the most disappointing team for my money in years. They had the talent to be really good, but every player regressed or stayed the same.
Rondo and Sparks hated each other - Sparks reportedly said one of the most racist things you could ever hear among a modern college basketball player to my buddy.
The missing fax was one of the strangest things I can recall at UK.
Those last two seasons among Tubby were dreadful, and I was glad he moved on. Whether Chuck Hayes on that team would've made a difference I don't know, but it could have.👍 1Comment

Yes...John Wall. Blazing speed, impeccable handles, great distributor, mediocre shooter. Maybe even poor shooter at that point in their careers.I've never seen anyone botch up a player of Rondo's caliber like Tubby Smith did. My god, can you imagine him under Calipari?

Of course we'd only have seen one year of him rather than 2.Comment

Agreed, Rondo could have been very special at Kentucky. Thing with Rondo is that he's a math wiz and understands everything including playbooks, very intelligent high IQ, to smart for his own good sometimes. If you are a Coach and calling out the plays of your playbook, you best know your playbook first because Rondo will call you out fast. Once Doc Rivers realized this and gave him the keys to drive, it was lights out for the Celtics. Rondo's tenacity and fire is his greatest asset yet his biggest downfall, he has to realize that all players can't do the math and figure out a play books and schemes the way he can, not everyone can read a offense or defense the way he can.I've never seen anyone botch up a player of Rondo's caliber like Tubby Smith did. As for Sparks, not to make any excuses on what he said or didn't say but if the rumors are true and Rondo was sleeping with his sweetheart, well we all know how emotions can run.

The move Rondo made against UConn coming had my jaw dropped to the floor, unbelievable full speed dribble move that had me questioning "did that just happen?"Comment

The first time I saw Rondo play was at Louisville Gardens against PRP in the LIT. Eastern had the lead at halftime and everybody knew PRP would come out a do what they did best, press all over the court. I've watched that press destroy teams. PRP put up their best effort but Rondo beat the press all by himself and by the 4th Q, PRP gave up. He did things in HS that was unbelievable.John 3:3

Eh, I dunno. Rick Pitino woulda had him if he hadn't wasted time on Sebastian Telfair. The kids Cal stays away from are the people with lecherous 'handlers' and the kids who are an NCAA case in the making. Cal was pretty complimentary and tried bringing Rondo back into the fold when he first got here.👍 1Comment
