Every recruiting thread on every board has the typical criticism of the NIL era . . . as “a mess,” . . . or as “out of control,” . . . or some such.
The most obvious effect of NIL since it’s introduction prior to the 2021 season is that it’s effective use allows traditionally weak programs a chance to over achieve.
The ultimate poster child of the new era is IU, but others such as Vandy and Iowa State stand
out, as each have achieved their first 10 win seasons in their lengthy histories in the last two seasons. Even Kentucky is an example, with its 4th 10 win season coming via that first NIL affected class of 2021, with Will Levis, Dare Rosenthal, Wandale Robinson, and other notables who came for pay.
Still, the complaints arise in every thread regarding recruiting, but I haven’t visited a Vandy or IU board.
I attended the Jan. 1, 22 Citrus Bowl, and during the game, no one even broached the subject of NIL, or that we had a hired gun (or six) who helped get us there.
I guess it is all perspective. Win, and all is forgotten, or forgiven.
And there are tons of threads saying Stein’s burgeoning recruiting success is running laps around what Stoops ever accomplished. While results, to date, look pretty impressive, this is “recency bias.” The last three years, Stoops’ portal choices were questionable, but I am not yet willing to elevate Stein’s strong start over a season with a New Year’s Day Florida Bowl victory.
But I hope I can by January 1, 2027.
And the only reason I can have that hope is provided by the transfer portal and NIL.
But, gosh, this is a “hot mess,” “out-of-control;” it is the “Wild, Wild, West,” and is clearly “non-sustainable,” and has “ruined college football.”
Now I feel better!!
When does the season start?
