    These are wild numbers.

And if this is the sort of thing that Kentucky is going to have to combat going forward, maybe it is better if we just throw in the towel and put all of our money and effort into basketball.

No one has been spending as much on football as TT the last year or so. And not shy about investing in men’s basketball either. Look up Cody Campbell.

Well I think if it’s somebody like TT pulling off things like this, I’m more accepting of it than I would be a traditional power doing it. I actually take this as a good sign that the power programs are actually going to have to fight for players and the wealth might be spreading. If this new business model UK athletics is adopting pans out like we hope, maybe we can win some of these type bidding wars ourselves at some point. So st least he’s at a program we don’t have to worry about as opposed to being at UGA or Texas, Bama, etc.

There's that Texas oil money. Just a crazy sum of money for one player.

Yeah, I don't understand the cost/benefits of deals like this. There's certainly no guarantee that this HS kid will be all-conference, AA or even just a solid starter at the next level. Motivation, developmental cycle, scheme, injury - any number of things can occur that would sabotage this kid's potential for greatness. And, btw, if he does look like he's gonna be a great player, the even richer programs (OSU, AL, PSU, USC, TX, OK, et al) may come and poach him away.

The real head scratcher to me is who in the world has so little going on in their life that it's THIS important ($5M worth of importance) for his alma mater to have a good LT? If I was worth $250M and made $4M annually, literally the last thing I'd consider would be writing a 6-figure check so that some HS kid could play FB at UK. Literally the last thing on my list just before 'take pile of cash, douse with gasoline, set fire'. How about giving to the university science dept? Or the American Cancer Society? Or Gary Sinise Foundation? Wouldn't that be a better use of $5M than a LT who may or may not be that good and/or stay at your alma mater?

I don't get these crazy sums either. At $5 million a pop, you're not going to be able to buy enough players to convert a mediocre football roster into a championship caliber one. So why bother? No team has the sort of bank to buy 22 elite starters. It would seem if they were going to splurge like this to try to make an impact, it would be much easier to do it in basketball where there are only 5 starting players. Going out and spending major $$$ on a couple of top 5 caliber kids could take an average roster and turn it into a really good one.

5 million for one player is insane.

I'm really not sure what is worse...someone valuing a high school player for that much or someone paying it.
