Trying to be realistic about the Barnhart hatred

MB is taking lots of hits. The first is over not hiring Petrino. To be fair, Arkansas fired him, Tennessee and AUBURN joined UK in passing over him. The man carried more baggage and potential baggage at the time than John Calipari ever had.....so I'm fine with the no go on him. We also forget that Leach was undergoing intense scrutiny for accusations of player abuse. I can see that no hire as well.

The double contract extension for this staff is, to me, the worst decision MB has made. It handcuffed the whole program. Realistically though....I never anticipated the wheels coming off the way this program has.

So....I would just throw out there that our AD is not so guilty of who he has not hired, but of jumping the gun in believing the program had turned a corner and was on a huge upsurge.

    Bad judgement call.

I think he's had two just bad moves. One was hiring Billy Clyde and the other was the extensions. I know none of us expected to not make a bowl after the starts we've had the last two years, but he should've waited until we got to 6 wins to extend anyone. I know Joker didn't work out, but I don't think it was a terrible hire at the time. It's just that hindsight is always 20/20.

I dont think it matters. If people think that Petrino to UK would equal would U of L has now I think they would be wrong. Jesus might be our only hope.

Could be right....but I get the idea he has some bigger priorities.

I don't hate Barnhart. But I don't respect him, either. He is not capable of doing his job in even mediocre fashion. He is paid an obscene amount for such deficient results.

This is his report card so far:

            B Brooks hire
            F Gillispie hire
            A Calipari hire*
            F Phillips hire
            I Stoops hire

*retook course after earning an F the first time

His transcript also has a P for the pass/fail freshman bunny zero level course all ADs have to take, for no course credit, called Non Revenue Sports or Irrelevant Teams or something like that.

            1.75 GPA

1.40 GPA if his final grade with the Stoops hire is an F

Neither is good enough to remain in good standing. Students paying tuition who do that poorly are asked to leave. Someone making $600K+ a year who does that poorly should also be shown the door.

That's just for football and basketball. I think, until this year WBB was a success, our cheerleaders, I believe our baseball team has been solid along with soccer every once in a while. Out of curiosity, how many championships has UK won during his tenure? There's more to an AD than two sports.

With all due respect, teamchemistry15, I must disagree. In my opinion, football and men's bb are what defines an AD's sucess or failure. Other than family and close friends, how many people do you think really care how many championships the cheer leading squad win, or the archery team or the rifle team. I know there's significantly more interest in baseball, softball and women's bb than the others I mentioned, but even those are way down on the totem pole from fb & men's bb.

I completely understand that. I know the majority of success is dependent on football and men's basketball. But like I said, hindsight is always 20/20. I don't think the Joker hire was THAT bad, he just didn't work out. BCG was terrible and extending Stoops was wrong. I don't think the Stoops hire was bad at all. Some people are just great coordinators and don't cut it as had coaches. I think the majority of the fan base was just fine with the hire at the time, it's just easy to look back now and question things.

To be quite honest, I don't remember how I felt about the Joker hire. Now that I have the benefit of hindsight, it looks like a bad hire to me. I wasn't thrilled with the Gillispie hire from day one. The fact that Mitch could have had Cal when he hired Gillispie, and had to be forced to hire Cal, the second time around, is two strikes against him, in my opinion. I think most everyone would agree that the Stoops extension was a terrible decision, even w/o the benefit of hindsight.

Jurich took a chance with Petrino for sure. Am convinced BP had to sell his sole to UL. As far as what BP could do at UK? Who knows. I thought Curry was the second coming and we would rise to the top of the SEC for sure. That didn't happen.

Football and basketball are all that matters, or count for credit. All of the other sports are like a pass/fail class in college: you are expected to pass, but get no course credit for it, but if you fail, your GPA suffers. I don't know how UK's women's basketball or cheerleaders, baseball team or soccer team have done and, like just about everyone else, I don't really care, and I'll never spend money on any of that.

The fact that neither you or I have any idea how many championships any of those teams have won speaks volumes. It doesn't matter. Football and basketball do. The minor, non-revenue, irrelevant sports don't, unless there's some sort of scandal with them.

I know that Barney always makes a big deal about the women's soccer team or whatever, but that doesn't mean it matters, and it doesn't cover up for his failures with the two sports that matter.

Kentucky has proved to be a dead man's walk for a lot of coaches for a lot of reasons. Kind of bizarre actually. I can think of no coach in my fan life (70s) that really left under good terms....or went on to have any success. Claiborne and Brooks retired, Curci faded to nothing...Morris took Baylor when they were setting records for futility (and continued that under him). Curry was done after having been COY three times in two different conferences. Mumme went to D2 oblivion. Joker Phillips .... I have no idea what he is doing now.

Tough gig for years......or just a historically bad bad bad string of luck with a sprinkling of a few good years thrown in.

Obviously, I don't know how coach Petrino would have fared here, but I suspect he would have done quite well since he's won everywhere he's coached. Bill Curry couldn't hold coach Petrino's headset.

With as good as UofHell is and as bad as we look in year 4 of Stoops I am sure I am in the small minority on this one, BUT--I'd rather have a hint of class and ethics than to ever bring Petrino here. I want a good program in a bad way but not at the cost of selling our souls. Juich proves more than anyone in sports with his handling of Pitino and Petrino that it's win at all costs. Can't stand their program now any more than when I was a kid! No, I do not see any similarities to Cal's reputation before we got him.
