We've seen it before.
Flashy DC from big name program dazzles a gullible AD and talks his way into becoming head coach at a local school, says all the right things to fire up the fans and the hype machine, but just does not have what it takes to manage a program, connect with players, or succeed as a head coach. Subsequent events show his success as a DC was due to overwhelming talent at his prior stop.
John Ray, Kentucky, 1969-1972
Ron Cooper, Louisville, 1997-1999
Mark Stoops, Kentucky, 2013-2016?
Norm Chow, Lane Kiffin, Charlie Weis...a lot of successful coordinators don't have what it takes to run a program.
I hope Stoops is different, but he definitely has some work to do and is behind reasonable expectations at this point.
