    Stoops call in show

I missed the first half of the show Monday. I heard Dave Baker & Oscar Combs talking about Dale from Frankfort on the pre game call in Tuesday night and he was mentioned in the paper one day this week.

Apparently he reamed the coach and when they were going to cut him off Stoops said something to the effect of I can handle this. Can anyone clue me in on some of the details of the call?

Here's a link to a H-L article. There's not much more here than what you already know.

One of the criticisms I've heard voiced over the past couple of weeks is the opinion that Stoops perhaps spends too much time jawing and arguing with refs. Apparently during such sessions is when we've been disorganized on defense or not had enough guys on the field. The opinion was, that extended arguing with the refs takes Stoops' focus away from the field and the team in the moment.

I can see that such an argument would have some validity, but I have no idea to the degree that Stoops does argue with officials. Even if it's not terribly frequent, but happens at key moments in the game, I can see it being detrimental - especially when you lose the close ones.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

I tend to agree because CS spends considerable time on the Officials, and sometimes it's a valid argument. However, coaches who do this have OC's and DC's they believe in and are doing a good job, but this just isn't the case with CS.

Here is a Saban rant that made me laugh. http://videos.al.com/al/2015/11/saba...ut_overlo.html The content has a few four letter words - don't want anyone to be offended. He referenced a Georgia Southern game when Georgia Southern ran for 300 yards against the Tide. I didn't realize Saban could use metaphors like a poet. Well, a horse barn poet in any event.

Funny rant. Saban seems like a world class a--hole but he runs an impressive program. I admire both he and Belichick for how they have been able to be consistently good and consistently select the right players.

            Case in point.

            If the video won't play.

It's interesting that you should mention Saban. He and his wife do a lot of charity work, especially in the area of scholarships. He was on David Feherty's show, on the Golf Channel, last evening. Thanksgiving Day he'll have Steve Spurrier on his show, and the next day a re-run of the one with Saban.

Here is a poster's comment from the Rivals Board on this very topic:

"I'll describe it the best I can. I was so shocked that he was allowed to tear into Stoops I might not get it perfect but it went something like this: He said his name was Dale and he took off like a rocket. Said Stoops says the guys need to be bigger, stronger, faster etc but reminded him that he said that three years ago and now he's had those three years and he says the talent is better so why are we still getting beaten while an underdog to a team like Vandy. Told him he can't say he's upgraded the talent one day and then use the lack of talent as an excuse the next day. He said Stoops claims UK football has been terrible for over 50 years and that was BS. He said Brooks had some good teams and we finally put money into the program and he didn't appreciate Stoops saying UK football has never had a winning program. Stoops sort of apologized for the comment but Dale went after him again and Stoops told Tom to let the guy keep talking. Dale said the fans bought in and they're doing their part and said Stoops doesn't even have a special teams coach and ended by saying that if we finish by losing the next two games that there won't be any fans in the stands next year and UK fans deserve better than what we're getting and it's time to see improvement. Then when he was hanging up to listen it seemed like Tom and Stoops were taking his comments a little light hearted and he jumped back in and told them it wasn't funny. Then Stoops started to acknowledge Dale's comments and the feed went haywire for five minutes so we couldn't hear what Stoops had to say. More than anything it was the passion in Dale's voice. If this guy could have suited up he would have beaten Vandy by himself. I really hope this wasn't a set up because he hit almost every point the fans are pissed about and he was madder than hell but he was very fair."

If I could find Dale from Frankfort, I would shake his hand and give him a medal.

Here's a link to the show. It's over 57 min. long, and I don't know at what point Dale calls in.

Over on KSR, they have the audio of just Dale. I'm glad they let him finish his rant, and Stoops wanted him to finish. Get 'em Dale! That was the call Stoops needed, and wanted to hear.

                      Here is the audio.

                      Transcript:
Dale: “We’ve put up with losing seasons for not just since you’ve been here, but the prior three years after (Rich) Brooks left. As a fanbase, we’re tired.”
                      Stoops: “I hear you.”
Dale: “Coach, get better recruits. You started things off by saying we’re bigger, faster, stronger. How much bigger, faster, stronger do you need to be?”
                      Stoops: “A lot. A lot.”
                      Dale: “What about player development?”
Stoops (to radio host): “No, let him go, I can take it.”
Dale: “I’m speaking for probably half of the Big Blue Nation that’s not brave enough to say it. I’m 59 years old. We’ve had football in this state, but we’re not a heavyweight. We hired you so we would be a heavyweight. You need to get the defensive coordinator on page with you, the offensive coordinator on page with you —“
Stoops (to radio host): “Let him go.”
Dale: “And you need to get more involved in the ballgame.”
Stoops: “I hear you, Dale. I agree with you.”
Dale: “People across Big Blue Nation are saying, ‘Hell yeah! Tell him, Dale!’”
Stoops: “I know it. That’s why I let you go, Dale. They were trying to dim you out, and I let them go.”
Dale: “If we lose these next two games, oh my God, ticket sales ain’t going to be good next year, new stadium or not.”
Stoops: “I appreciate it. I’m good with him. I’m a big boy. That’s why I’m here. To take that criticism. You asked a lot of poignant questions. How long’s it going to take? I don’t know. Are we bigger? We’re bigger, faster, and we are. How much more do we need to be? A lot. To be the contender you want to be and I want to be and compete for championships, it takes big, strong, mature guys. In this sport, it takes guys to develop year after year after year, top-20 recruits classes five years in a row, and then you’re going to be an SEC heavyweight. Can we contend, play better and win some of those games? Absolutely. Should we? Yes. We’ve been close. This is the first time I feel like we were a better team and went in there and lost (to Vandy). That puts the frustration at the highest point, and that goes with the territory, because I feel the same way.”

Does everyone agree that this is the first time we've lost to a team that wasn't as good as we were? I do. Wondering if somebody can come up with counter examples.

I agree. Perhaps Western KY a few years ago.

...and then Dale got all defensive during the Basketball pre-game. Didn't come off smelling like a rose on that one, but hey, clearly he doesn't care.

I appreciate Stoops for not just having the guy cut off. I'd guess that most coaches would have. Props to Stoops for that one.

I still cringe when I think back to that first game of Stoops tenure against WKU. We were such a dumpster fire (even moreso than this year lol) that looking back, it was like Stoops and his staff was just trying find out in a real game who could play and who couldn't. Frankly, I'm not sure we were a better team than WKU was in 2013, and sadly, I'm still not sure in 2015.
