Two things: (1.) if you'd like to see how an off. should perform, I'd encourage everyone, who has the opportunity, to watch at least part of one of Washington State's games. (2.) I couldn't agree more with the last two sentences of the last paragraph in the post just before this one.

I had to check Washington State's roster. On Offense they start 3 RS Sr's, 2 RS Jrs, 2 Jrs, and 4 RS Sophomores. The youngest players are at least 20 years old balanced with 22/23 year old players. It's about the same for the starters on defense. Well there's 1 true freshman starter on defense - a CB. I would definitely rather have guys who have the physical maturity and experience of RS Soph, Jr's and Srs than have to work with true freshmen and RS freshmen. It can be a roller coaster with a really young team.

They commented during the UGA game about Westry having the skills but he still has a HS body.

Ironically, h.s. body or not, Westry is one of the best def. players on the team.

Washington State is 8-3 now and in second place in the Pac 12 North. They won at Oregon this year. They won at Arizona this year. They won at #19 UCLA. They beat Arizona State. They lost by 2 at Stanford, who has been in the top 10 most of the year or all of it. They average 491 yards of offense per game and are #1 in the nation in passing offense, all with a roster of 2 and 3 star kids.

Pretty excellent for a team that was 2-11, 1-11, 2-10, 4-8 in the four years before Leach's arrival,

I bet most UK fb fans would be giddy with numbers like those. I know I would.

We all do sometimes. No big deal.

I think the guy is fascinating. Never played football, went to law school, decided to coach, and has had remarkable success in two very difficult situations without much talent. He's about the closest thing to a model for coaches at any school lacking a ton of talent and tradition.

Leach is just really odd fellow. I'm not sure all what he does would have flown here. He can get away with being odd on the west coast. Just really hard to say if he had done well at UK or not. SEC is still better and more difficult than the Pac 12. Also there was some controversy over him at Texas Tech about hitting or abusing a player in some way. I don't remember the details of that. So that would have been a huge consideration in hiring him.

Two thoughts: if coach Leach could have brought competitive, entertaining fb to UK, I believe his idiosyncrasies would have been tolerated. In my opinion, he got a bum deal at TT. He was dealing with a spoiled brat (Craig James' son) and that caused him all kinds of problems.

+1 on both scores. Craig James and his son were more in the wrong than Leach, IMO, and Tech knuckled under because of ESPN's immense influence. James left to run for the U.S. Senate and got what he deserved. Texas Tech got what they deserved, too.

Nebraska, Virginia Tech and Duke all won their bowl games last night. All three of them lost to Miami this year, and so did 8-4 Pitt, whose bowl game is coming up. That 8-4 Miami squad lost to Washington State in the Sun Bowl yesterday.

Mike Leach's team finishes 9-4 on the year. Once again, with a roster that, according to recruiting rankings, measurements (weight, 40 times, bench presses, etc.) or any other standard is inferior to most of his opponents, Mike Leach wins. Washington State's records in the years before he arrived: 4-8, 2-10, 1-11, 2-11.

Leach's unorthodox methods, superb playcalling (increasingly, on both sides of the ball) and ability to get the most out of players who aren't that gifted - he is better at doing more with less than any other coach in college football, I think.

Plus, his teams are fun to watch.
