Kentucky Tight Ends are Crazy in All of the Right Ways

The tight end position has become one of the most important on a football field. It’s a demanding position, one that asks players to do a little bit of everything. They need to be able to get open against exceptional defensive backs and bully opponents in the trenches. It requires elite athleticism and probably a few loose screws between the ears. The Kentucky tight ends are checking those boxes.

“Off the field, they’re nice, real nice, but on the field, they’re crazy,” safety Ty Bryant said after Saturday’s scrimmage.

I'm sure we have Travis Kelce, Brock Bowers and Trey McBride on the squad. They'll be unstoppable! I'm just hoping that the TEs play a consistent role in the offense, which I expect they will if Stein's history is any indication.

Where's the optimism that usually comes from having a fresh start Jaxcat? You seem to be really down on the new coaching staff.

I know it sounds like I'm down on the new staff, but I'm not. I'm just worn out with the optimism every single spring only to see ineptitude year after year. And every new football HC in the history of the sport comes in and says how it's been the best offseason, the team is really jelling, they've worked harder than any team prior, etc.

I'm worn out with hype. Show me some results and I'll be the most optimistic fan on the board. But, practicing against your teammates is not any kind of accurate indicator of how the team will play when real bullets start flying.

How many years have we heard that THIS year is gonna be different? This year we'll see the TEs as weapons and critical elements in this new, exciting offense? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 55 times (and counting), shame on me.

I have low expectations this year as a defensive measure. Too many years I've been overly optimistic about the team only to see that many of our opponents have significantly better players and coaches. I just won't let myself be caught up again in preseason 'how good we look'.

Even last year, we were starting that stretch of games after beating FL to reach 4-5, I convinced myself that all 3 were winnable, but, surely, we can win 2 and be bowl eligible. Well, we all saw what happened. Both Vandy and UofL obliterated us. Quite frankly, both looked much better talent-wise and coaching-wise. And for the millionth time, I kicked myself for falling into that same trap. Well, no more.

As an ole fellow who began following UK sports in general and UK fb in particular in 1954, I can relate. Still with each coaching change I get rejuvenated again. I just can't help myself.
