Too lazy to watch > an hour: what are the holes in the roster? IMO, it appears that the WR and RB room have some potential issues (depth, playmaking ability). A few of our WRs need to really make some headway. RBs have some playmakers but injury history and lack of proven, quality depth is a concern. Starting OL looks solid (no idea about any depth) as does the TE room. QB room is full - hope one or more are pretty good. I would expect the staff to tweak the scheme to match each QB's strong points and to have more than 1 QB ready to go every game.
Secondary of the defense has a lot of talent and proven commodities. Barring a bunch of injuries, I would expect much better from that group than we saw under the previous regime. DL added some talent and had some stay at UK - not too worried about them just yet. LB room is full of potential with limited experience but I do believe there is pretty good athleticism and size and depth. Just have to see how they mesh.
Hoping both sides of the ball have better overall schemes. Would like to see more aggressiveness from the defense as far as jumping routes, DL attempting to penetrate and blow up plays, LBs making correct reads and shooting into the backfield. I don't know that the offense will be more aggressive (seems like we threw a LOT of bombs with Hamdan calling plays) but should be more efficient, adaptable to the defense and flexible to take what the defense is giving. I hope we don't see more long stretches where the offense is 3-and-out or maybe 1 first down before punting. Multiple games where we had < 180 yards of total offense entering the 4th quarter and a good chunk of that was one drive - don't want to see any such games next season.
I am very concerned about QB depth and OL depth. We have a lot of bodies in the QB room, but the best of them have very little experience (Minchey, Ward and Matt P) and the rest of them have experience at lower levels. OL depth has been around a while, but is largely unproven.
I feel not great but OK about the skill positions on offense, and I feel pretty good about the defense.
IMO, the roster is ok. I think our coaches did a very good job of meeting many of our needs, but it was going to be an uphill climb. We have to hope we don’t have injuries to key players and kids that haven’t played much step up. I like the fact that many of the guys we went and got have multiple years left, so hopefully we won’t be working from such a hole during next years cycle. I think our expectations shouldn’t be very high for this year to be quite frank. Brutal schedule. I’ll be thrilled if I’m wrong. I would be happy watching a thin, well-coached team that is exciting and gets better as the year goes along. I just don’t know if we have enough skilled guys on offense to score consistently in the SEC, and I have no idea what to expect from our defense.
