    Service Academies and Portal?

One of the teams playing yesterday had a player that had come in from the Portal from the Naval Academy. How does attending a Service Academy work, does a person going to the Academy get free tuition in exchange for service later? If a player does leave an Academy do they have to pay anything back to the Academy?

    Thanks

It's been years since I looked into the academies but at that tine, one was committed to the military for two years initially. You actually enlisted in the military and have a rank and a pay grade. At the end of your initial two year commitment you can either leave or re-enlist for four more years. There are regular promotions along the way but always as an enlisted man. Normally after four years you are commissioned as a 2nd Lt/Ensign with an additional four year commitment.

Thanks for that. I sort of thought that it was done like that. Now what happens if a player or anyone one I guess leaves after 1 year at an Academy? Do you owe anything back to that Service Academy for 1 year of education?

Again, it's been a while but having enlisted for two years one can't just decide to leave. If you decide to leave the academy, you would be obligated to serve a year as a regular enlisted man.

Had a guy tell me you don't have to make a committed to service until your Jr. year. So can leave in your first two years for any reason without any committed and no repayment back to the Academy

Here is a different question about the service academies. The Army-Navy games is always the week after the CFP bracket comes out. What if one of those 2 teams is the highest ranked G5 team going into that game and a win would keep them at the top and a loss would move someone else ahead of them. What would they do. A contingency plan would be a mess if they were from 2 different conferences, bc of the tie-in to bowl games. I wonder what the heck they would do.
