I had not read this until today, and did not know that any 5-7 Power conference teams had been offered or accepted for a bowl.
Miss. State bowling at 5-7! Hail State, Hail State!

Two weeks ago I had read the first 5-7 teams to be considered would be FCS teams moving up
to FBS next year, and there were a couple of them. Apparently they either refused or there were just too many open
slots.
I found examples back to the 1950’s of break-even and even a losing team playing in Bowl games: back when all bowls were truly meaningless (polls awarded their final rankings at the end of November), the bowls were truly wild-wild-west. They could offer a team a bowl slot half-way through the season, and often did.
Kentucky received a Gator Bowl invite just before the Houston game in 1964, but voted to hold out for the Sugar Bowl. We lost our QB at Houston, and but for Xavier, would have lost out, finishing with only 6 wins.

At 5-7, Mississippi State bowled (and won) in 2016 or 2017, one of Dan Mullen’s bowl wins.
Frankly, had Kentucky not gone through a coaching change, we would have likely
gotten a call before State: they were 1-7 in the SEC and we were 2-6.👍 1Comment
