It's got to be difficult to keep a roster together nowadays. Today, we have 5 QBs on the team: Calzada, Boley, Allen, Ward, Saunders. We obviously lose Allen and Calzada. With Boley a RS Fr, you have to figure at least one of Ward/Saunders transfers, if not both. We do have Ponatoski coming in, but no way Stoops wants a true Fr being the #2 - just not in his DNA. If Ward and Saunders both transfer (not a stretch), we're really thin at QB next year and almost have to get 2 or more to have any depth.
In addition, 4 of the 5 starting OL are gone after this year and Farmer may go to the NFL early. I haven't seen a lot of backups playing on the OL, so Boley is more likely to get hit more often next year presumably, which means quality depth at QB is even more essential. I'd love to have Ward stick around - I was impressed with what little I saw of him on Saturday. The moment didn't seem too big for him (admittedly, it was against TN Tech but it WAS his first real action, also).
I would bet either Ward or Saunders sticks one more year at least and we'll have 3 QBs on scholly next year (might pick up a developmental QB late in the cycle). Regardless, looks like we'll be shopping heavily in the transfer portal (again). I wish it weren't that way but we just haven't been able to build a near-complete roster in some time now, along with a great many other schools in the new era.
