    LSU hiring new coach

The Louisiana governor came out today and said the AD at LSU would not be involved in the hiring of the new coach. Can we do that here with Barney?

As much crap as Barney gets, he's done a pretty good job hiring coaches over the years. Anyone that has been in a job for 23 years is going to make mistakes. If you compare it to almost any other university, and their hirings over a 23 year period, he gets a solid grade. He's basically got 2 out of 3 hires right in both sports and cut ties with the coaches that didn't working out after 2 and 3 years.

Now, where he absolutely sucks is the contract portion of it. It's not the hires that have been the biggest problem, it's his knack for folding and giving whatever is being asked and then saddling the university with these crazy contracts (or never signing a contract in the BCG situation).

I’ll be interested to see what kind of candidates end up being attached to them. On paper, it’s an attractive job that combines big money, a backyard recruiting hotbed, and a premiere conference. I do have to wonder if the governor so directly inserting himself into process combined with the rumor that they’re invoking a “morality clause” to beat Kelly out of half his buyout is going to cause a lot of coaches to think twice though.

Articles talking about LSU may not be a good place to coach.

If the AD isn't competent enough to make the hire (before the hire is made) then they shouldn't be the AD.

Exactly, I always thought that was one of the AD's responsibilities.

LSU is one of the premier jobs in the country. It is certainly the best job that is open right now. Tons of money, support, and tradition in Baton Rouge. The first two calls will be to Saban and Urban. I think both will say no. After that, who knows? Sumrall will probably be on a short list somewhere. You'd have to think a guy like Dan Lanning would get a shot before Sumrall.

Sumrall's name is popping up all over the place from what I see. He's been mentioned for Auburn if Freeze is canned, Ole Miss if Kiffin moves on, LSU and Arkansas as well.

Lanning came out and said the only way he's leaving Oregon is if he stops winning. In other words, they'll have to fire him.

I hate that the governer got involved in this. I do not want any politician, in any state, inserting themselves into the hiring and firing of coaches and AD's.

It’s all totally out of control.

Going to be interesting with Sumrall. With the loss last night and trips to Memphis and Temple still on the schedule, he could finish the season 8-4/5-3 (following a 9-5 season last year). Some of the star power might be worn off a little at that point for a school like LSU or Florida.. Might be good for UK as I still have him as a top 3 candidate here.

It's not happening for us. Pres. C. likes Barnhart, or so I've heard.

Barnhart is pretty much a university president's dream as an AD.

Barnhart will keep his job until he retires. The President doesn’t care or worry about sports.
