Matt Jones on Mark Stoops: '85-90% chance' Kentucky has a new coach next year

After the embarrassing loss to Tennessee, a lot of Kentucky fans took out their frustrations on the F5 button/refresh on Sunday, hoping news would break that Mark Stoops was no longer the coach. That did not happen, but Matt Jones believes it’s only a matter of time before a change is made.

On this morning’s episode of Kentucky Sports Radio, Jones shared the latest he’s hearing about the coaching situation. He said the lopsided loss to the Vols dramatically increased the likelihood that the program will part ways with Stoops — unless the team somehow turns it around and goes to a bowl game. Kentucky is currently 2-5, 0-5 in the SEC, with five games remaining.

“Here’s where we are for the future. I know this for — it’s rarely I say certainty. I’ll say some certainty. I’d say we’re now at an 85 to 90% chance we’ll have a new coach next year. If you asked me that two weeks ago, before the Texas game, that number would have been like 50-55%. It’s 85%.”

“The only way it could be different, in my opinion, is if they were to win three [games], if they were to go 6-6, which would mean beating Auburn, Florida, and then either Vandy or Louisville.”

For the past few months, it’s felt like a 5-7 finish would be the gray area that would make Mitch Barnhart and the administration hesitate to make a change. Jones believes that’s no longer the case.

“I think there was a time 5-7 would have made it close; I don’t think it does anymore. Florida didn’t have a coach. Auburn’s barely got a coach. I mean, Vandy and Louisville, if you get one of those, that’d be nice, but I don’t think it changes anything, unless you beat Auburn and Florida.”

I only see us winning one more game. I don’t see how Stoops survives this year other than the ridiculous buy out.

No inside information, but CMS strikes me as a man who knows his time is done. I continue to believe he’ll leave at the end of the year, with an announcement sometime before then of an amicable and professional parting of the ways. To everything there is a season.

There's no guarantee we beat Tennessee Tech. They are 8-0 and score an average of 50 pts a game and only give up an average of 15 ppg on defense. I realize they've played a different level of competition and all, but definitely not somebody we can overlook in our current situation.

Before the season started, I picked us to go 4-8. It's looking more and more like 3-9 or even 2-10.

                Totally agree. Good points.

                  I had us going 2 and 10 or 3 and 9

I had 3-9 and it looks like a good bet we get there but not much else. If we go 2-10 it will be par for the course these past few years.

That buyout is really the elephant in the room. I don’t think there’s really anyone left at this point wanting to give Stoops another year for purely football reasons, but unless he does us a favor by retiring or moving to another (likely lesser) job, that’s a big bill to get stuck with, especially since it’s due almost immediately instead of spread over multiple years.

How in the world did Matt Jones become an expert? I really don’t care much for his arrogance.

He's really not an expert. And I can't really stand him or really any of the KSR stuff anymore. I used to listen to the show years ago, but it got so old, stale and lame that I don't bother anymore.

I have no feelings about Matt one way or the other, and I'm not defending him, but I imagine he's in a position to hear things most of us don't hear. Just my opinion of course.

Wonder what the odds are of UK hiring someone competent? Someone who is excellent? Not too good, I imagine.
