He's not wrong. Unfortunately, if he is indeed correct as I believe, there's no way out of this hole. We're always going to be at a huge disadvantage due to lack of NIL to entice the exceptional players to come here, whether transfers or HS seniors. IMO, the only way to combat this disadvantage is to recruit and bring on those players who fit a certain, particular scheme that don't fit what TX, OSU, OR, AL, GA, et al run. A smaller DT QB, for instance, might be recruited by some of those schools but he's really never going to have a chance to play because they won't change their philosophy for him. At UK, we could target those types of players who don't have the NFL measurables but are darn good athletes and football players to come play for UK. We will not will championships, but I believe we could be a 6-8 win team consistently and near the middle of the SEC. I believe that's the ceiling for UK FB. I know some will say I'm a bad fan because I accept we're not going to win a CFP championship, but that's just reality. Mississippi State basketball is never going to win an NCAA championship. But, finishing in the middle or better in the SEC and getting to March Madness is probably their ceiling (I used MSSt as an example - I have no idea if their BB team is any good or not; there are SEC teams who will never win a championship in BB, just maybe not MSSt).👍 1 -

Excellent post, Jaxcat. I think most realistic fans would be happy with 6-8 wins per season. I know I would.Philippians 4:11-4:13👍 1Comment

^'Realistic' doesn't describe the majority of fans, unfortunately. Could we capture lightning in a bottle like IU has done (or Vandy)? Yes, for a year or two. What's the likelihood that IU and Vandy can maintain their current position over the next 5-10 years with all the disadvantages they, too, have? I'd guess that likelihood is not very high. We'll see.Comment

I don’t expect them to win at the highest levels, but they’ve got something to sell to a talented subset of football players.Last edited by Helix; 1 week ago.Comment

Will UK ever recruit like Bama, TX, UGA, most likely not, we don't produce a ton of D1 athletes as a state. Can we have recruiting classes in the teens and middle of the SEC pack, absolutely. All it takes is a spark, look at IU. The problem is the current coaching staff, they get paid elite money for crap results. I don't know who they should hire, but I have my ideas. Sumrall, Will Stein, Glenn Schumann, or Bryant Haines. Hire someone young, hungry, and not afraid to be different.Comment

In case you are interested, Tulane uses the RPO offense. I watched part of their recent game against Duke and was impressed. Their QB is Jake Retzlaff, the QB who was dismissed by BYU for an honor code violation. Tulane's game this week is the Thursday night game on ESPN.👍 1Comment

Vandy is doing this right now — unusual triple option offense with passing elements no one else is running, very good, not exceptional, players and a dual threat QB with off-the-charts intangibles/moxie who will never sniff the NFL as a QB. And in Vandy’s case, an academic rigor that will appeal to some.

Overall though I see your correct point that they have a niche, they’re doing things different than others and for now at least…it’s working better than whatever we are trying.Comment

We really need a lot more than a coach to lead us. We need SEC level players. BUT...you usually don't get those unless you win. In conference, we should look at the pattern of Missouri...or find what Lea bottled at Vandy. Even when they weren't winning, those kids were playing hard. HARD.
Long way to go. Again.Comment
