I somewhat disagree with Bush. What we need is some creativity from the OC. If he can't provide that, then, yes, it's probably prudent to run, run, run between the tackles, throw the random bubble screen, pitch forward to a WR in motion (a 'pass'? I guess, technically), etc. But, a sharp OC would recognize where our weaknesses are (WR corps' inability to create separation, OL shakiness on pass pro, lack of real playmakers) and come up with ways to overcome those weaknesses. As others have posted in other threads, timing patterns that don't rely on WRs winning one-on-one battles, drags across the field and quick slants to allow the WR space to run at full speed and create some space, shorter route trees to alleviate the pressure on the OL to protect the QB longer than 3 seconds, misdirection in the running game, screens to RBs with blockers in front, etc. Just throwing up your hands and waving the white flag is unacceptable and not what that guy is getting paid for. Earn your keep, Bush.

Even if Stoops remains, Hamdan HAS to go. And, I know many on here believe it's a Stoops problem but I'm not convinced. Hamdan has shown no feel for the game, does not seem to make any in-game adjustments even after the defense obviously has and our offense has been stonewalled for multiple series, makes some real head-scratching play calls throughout the game that hamper any rhythm we may be building, doesn't seem to force the defense to stop a particular play after it works (abandons it more times than not), doesn't seem to be setting up future plays, etc. I can't see much improvement in our QB play and, IIRC, he's also the QB coach. All in all, he's been a huge disappointment. His hiring is definitely on Stoops but I can't quite believe Stoops is involved in play calling and personnel decisions in-game - isn't that what he hires an OC to do? Surely he has too much on his plate during the game to be calling plays, changing the personnel, etc.

Stoops pudgy little fingers are all over the offense. He has had numerous OCs with the same results. He is the common denominator.

His hiring is definitely on Stoops but I can't quite believe Stoops is involved in play calling and personnel decisions in-game - isn't that what he hires an OC to do? Surely he has too much on his plate during the game to be calling plays, changing the personnel, etc.

So how do you explain the long list of OCs who have come to UK and failed? The same OCs who go somewhere else and are successful.

^The truth is I can't explain it. But, I also find it hard to believe he calls the plays. He's most definitely involved with the game plan and, likely, in specific situations. But, he's not calling bubble screens on 3rd and 8 in the first quarter of the 2nd game of the season. He's just not.

Some other factors that probably play into OCs who've failed here but did better elsewhwere:
1. Our talent difference compared to our SEC brethren most years is huge (compare the # of UK players in the NFL to almost every other SEC school) and possibly not nearly as large at the new school the OC coaches later
2. Several of the OCs didn't exactly light it up elsewhere - Scang may still be unemployed, Dawson took a while and a Heisman winning QB to find his groove, etc
3. Our defensive philosophy supercedes the offense and so the OC can't be a gambler (that's on Stoops)
4. We have no offensive identity and, therefore, our personnel is mismatched for the offense we're trying to run, i.e., pocket passer when we're using RPO, outside zone OL when we want to run inside zone, big, possession WRs when we want to push the ball down the field

Again, I dont know. The blame is ultimately on Stoops - no argument from me. But I doubt he's calling plays in the middle of games unless it's a very specific situation. I believe he torpedoed the program when he didn't decide on an offensive philosophy and stick with it, come hell or high water. Changing schemes every other year means the personnel is almost always going to be mismatched. By the time we've corrected the roster, we're running a different system again.

He might not make the call at that time in the game, but he is limiting the OC from what they can call. Go and look at Bush at his other jobs call playing and such. Nothing like here. Same for Liam or any other OC under Stoops. I am sure on Sunday and Monday he (stoops) discuss offense with Bush, tells him what they need to do for the upcoming opponent. I bet Bush has several hundred plays in his book. I bet Stoops allows maybe 5% of those plays.

Defense is how Stoops wants to control a game. Running is how he hopes to limit the other teams offense possessions. That plan has not worked in 2 years now for sure if not 4 years counting this year.

I agree, I don't think Mark calls plays either. However, I do believe he is involved in game planning and influences play calling indirectly.

Again I agree. This is especially evident with the OL. You can't switch to a wide zone run game and expect the road graders you recruited to perform well.

Unfortunately, at this stage I don't see anything that could make a meaningful change in the results this year.

I will not be surprised however if Bush is fired after this Sat and Gran installed as an interim OC. We have another bye week next weekend and thus Eddie would have two weeks before the next game.

Exactly you could go get Hartline from Ohio State and put him in this position here at UK and he would look mediocre. Like you said time to start over with a whole new clean slate next year.
