    Stoops

I tell you what……If Stoops could make a slight change in his thinking, he could once again be successful at UK.

He’s an excellent defensive coach, no issues
His game mentality is an issue and needs to let the OC run his game plan and mix up passing with running and forget time control. Run the hurry up in some situations. Too many 3 and outs and penalties drains the defense
His players stay out of trouble

Saturday is probably his most important game ever for his future. This game is very winnable and the Cats should be very competitive against this team. I expect a win.

After Gundy got fired my mentality has changed back to reality.

Most coaches with the tenure of a Stoops won't make the changes needed to adapt. It is unfortunate but a sad truth.

I know he won't do it, but switching to more of a Ravens/Eagles run-first NFL offense seems like the best choice he could make. I don't believe we'll ever be able to have the elite QB, OL, receivers and RBs necessary to run a true NFL offense. But the Ravens and Eagles have tailored their scheme to take advantage of their QBs legs as well as his arm - big, bruising OL, a lot of RPO concepts, dangerous passing attack but some of that is the result of having to key on the run and on the QB running, imo.

Overall, during his tenure the defense has been pretty good. But, pretty much every year there is at least one game that defies explanation where both the offense and defense phone it in and play hugely uninspired football. Also, the overall philosophy of bend-don't-break has cost us games and certainly made what should be comfortable wins nailbiters. We seem to have a let down just before and just after halftime many games and that puts even more pressure on our always shaky offense. Oftentimes, there doesn't seem to be any halftime adjustments when our opponent certainly appears to have made some. When we shorten the game significantly as we often do, every series for both the offense and defense become even more critical.

He's done a good job. It's still baffling to me that we have many of the same problems year after year though: dumb/undisciplined play and penalties, inability to have that killer instinct to put the game away, clock management, inability to get the offensive play called promptly, inability to develop a QB and consistently effective passing attack. Whoever eventually takes over for Stoops may have many of the same shortcomings. But, another season of 4-8 or worse - I just can't see the admin keeping him around. They may not fire him but they may entice him to step down with some dignity and a revamped payout.

The key to being successful in football, especially the SEC is balance. Sure you can have a great rushing attack, but teams can prepare for that. Same with a great passing game. You have to have both. So far Stoops prefers only to focus on running the ball. This could explain why some QB's and receivers are not high on UK..
