Stoops said we were 'close' to winning vs Ole Miss

That may be true - I'll grant him that. But, he also said 'we played winning football for most of the game' and I have to take issue with that statement.

Ole Miss ran up almost 500 yards and 30 points. The defense was great for a few series and a sieve for several. Can't say I would put their performance in the 'winning football for most of the game' category.

The offense, until the last, pretty meaningless drive, had less than 300 yards total offense and 20 points, 10 which the defense practically gave them. Yes, they had some good plays and a nice drive or two. But, disorganization, critical false start/illegal formation/holding calls crippled some drives, insanely bad play calling at times, poor execution by the QB on many passing plays, embarrassingly bad clock management by the staff and players, etc. outweigh by quite a margin the good the offense did, imo.

If what we saw on the whole of Saturday's game is 'winning football', then we really are doomed. After the patsy of EMU, who we should beat by no less than 4 TDs, we go to SC, then to Georgia then host TX. We could easily be 2-4 at the halfway point with TN, FL, AU and UofL still to be played. Vandy already has UK circled as an SEC game they can win, so that's not anywhere close to a given. My preseason prediction was 5 wins with a possibility of 6 if we pulled an upset. I wish I was wrong but, judging from the first 2 games, I can't see any path to 5, much less 6, wins.

As the old saying goes, 'close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades'. The sad thing is that this was a very winnable game had the coaching staff only been halfway decent. That may have been the closest we will come to winning a SEC game all season.

Sure. About as close as Mitch is to making a good contract.
Going forward, Christian Laettner volunteers to catch any dildos flung on a basketball court - or anywhere else.

Sadly, you could be right. Can’t count on a Vandy win.

Stoops is playing the propaganda angle. If he was honest he would have stated the coaching staff let a win slip away. I have never seen any coaching that bad and this is the SEC collegiate level. My niece had 4 football coaches with her at the game and they all left shaking their heads and stated it was worst coaching they have ever seen.

There are 2 more wins on the schedule and 2 what if’s which includes Vandy and U of L. However, both are better coached. 4-8 is my prediction.

Yeah, I can live with this type of talk from a new coach trying to build their own culture. Not so much from a coach who has been here for a decade plus where we've lost games in similar fashion.

I groaned when Cal said this type of stuff and this is feeling like deja vu on the football side.

If Stoops truly believes that BS he should be fired immediately! The chaos of getting plays to the QB, the play calls and clock management is unbelievable!

With proper coaching they probably would have won.

With the mistakes this team made plus the coaching miscues.....
I don't know if I'd remind everyone we should have won.

I've never considered having to take a time out on the first play of a drive because you can't get your offense organized "winning football" but what do I know?

As a 60 year UK fan, I wonder how many times I have heard that refrain from our coach. He really needs to read the room.
