He is definitely interested in returning to coaching and in the SEC. He so stated weeks ago. He might be ok to jump start a program but at age 62 I'm not sure how long he would be interested in coaching.

I'm not enthused. He's been out of coaching for quite a while. I do think our QBs would be much better with the mental side of playing the position.

IMO, Mitch needs to call him first thing tomorrow morning, let him think about it for a while. Then at seasons end call him again.

Seriously? This guy is a QB guru. However, he would not be my pick. I’d hire a young OC with a wide open passing package. Just my 2 cents

Pass for me. I'm sure there are better options.

Haven't we gone down this road a couple of times already?

Care to elaborate? just curious who you think would be better ? I like sumerall, but jon gruden and his connections are very attractive . If jon wants to be in the sec why not Kentucky.

There will be tons of opinions on who we should go after. I am just assuming Barnhart has Sumrall penciled in as his first call, and we could certainly do worse. I think Gruden might be worse. He built his reputation off one Super Bowl, but has really done nothing remarkable as a HC since. I also don’t agree that we need to go the Josh Huepel (sp)/Mike Leach throw it 50 times a game route either. We need a coach who will stay out of his OC’s way though. I think that’s largely been Stoops downfall. I think a guy like Sumrall would know better.

Never a Gruden fan. Seldom have i seen a decent pro coach make a good college coach.
Just me. I don't get a legit vote on who gets hired.

This is what I said: I do think our QBs would be much better with the mental side of playing the position. I believe one could infer that I believe Gruden is a good QB coach, maybe even a 'guru'. However, I agree that he would not be my pick, either.

One reason: I am becoming convinced that UK pursuing running a 'pro style' (wide zone, lots of passing, lots of reads to make, etc.) offense is a losing proposition. It will be very rare for us to have the requisite talent on offense to run it effectively. OTOH, I think we could consistently recruit and run a RPO-based attack (maybe similar to the Eagles) without needing NFL ready QB, WRs, RBs and OL. Since few of the very top teams run that type of offense, we should be able to be successful recruiting to that system. We all have seen how difficult it is to defend an offense with a true DT QB. Just one more reason I don't think Gruden would be my choice - he would not run anything other than his pro scheme and I don't think we'll ever have the talent to run it and beat the upper echelon of SEC teams. Just my $0.02.

Let Florida Hire him when they ultimately let Napier go.

He really hasn't done all that much and there's a reason he's not coaching now and has had other extended times away from coaching. Plus - didn't he have a bit of a scandal somewhere? Nothing major, I just seem to remember some kind of scuttlebutt.

Count me among those who don’t understand the fascination with him. He did win that 2002 Super Bowl, but that’s literally the last playoff game he ever won despite coaching 9 more full seasons afterwards. Heck, he didn’t even make the playoffs in 7 out of those last 9 years, and has an overall record of 117-112. I just don’t see him as some kind of rare coaching genius despite his reputation, and his only college experience was a couple of seasons as an assistant in the 80s.

There’s no such thing as a guaranteed success in coaching hires, but if Stoops were to move on, I think Sumrall or another up and coming college coach would at least be a smarter choice with a higher chance of working out.
