Coaches have all the leverage and the universities are never getting it back. Coaches know that, agents know that and universities know that. No coach is going to agree to a contract that doesn't include a hefty buyout. It's just the norm now.
I 100% agree that coaches are hired to win games and the fact you can't fire them with cause for not winning games is the craziest thing. 75% of owed salary seems to be the norm. What schools can do, and there Mitch screwed up, is make stipulations on how it is paid out that benefits the university. Much easier to fire a guy like Deboer who is owed his remaining salary over the life of the contract than to fire a guy like Stoops who is owed a lump sum. Mitch screwed the pooch on that one.
