Source: Kentucky names transfer Zach Calzada starting QB

Kentucky is naming veteran transfer Zach Calzada the starting quarterback, a source told ESPN.

Calzada will make his debut for the Wildcats against Toledo on Aug. 30.

Per an ESPN source, Calzada's experience helped him win out, as he has started 32 games in his college career and gone 23-9.

Calzada is a seventh-year senior who began his college career at Texas A&M in 2019 and was there through 2021. He spent the 2022 season at Auburn and then had productive years at Incarnate Word the past two seasons. That included finishing No. 2 in the FCS in passing touchdowns last year (35) and finishing No. 5 in passing yards (3,744).

Let’s hope the 25 year old can hand it off cleanly. Cutter will be in after he gets hurt on sack #10

No real surprise there. It will be interesting to see how much Boley plays or whether Calzada will be durable enough to make it through the year.

Not surprised, but Feeling much better about Boley for the long-term future. Glad we have two capable QB's who are seemingly on a level playing field and if Calzada goes down, we don't have to hit the panic button. That and we may finally have an actual Homegrown QB for the next 2-3 seasons with Boley, Assuming he sticks around. This truly is a pivotal season with not a lot of room for error.

I like what I saw in a recent interview with Calzada - talked about making the reads, not getting impatient, hit the checkdown or safety valve receiver and keeping the chains moving. I think we'll see better execution from the QBs this year. I don't believe the QBs will feel like certain guys HAVE to get touches. If you're open, you'll get your chance. If not, shut up and get open. Last year was a complete cluster as BVG got gun shy after taking so many hits and Wimsatt was a one-trick pony who wasn't especially adept at that one trick. Neither impressed me with their ability to read a defense and throw to the right guy.

Stoops is still the coach and the backup qb has never had a chance since Stoops has been here, unless it’s because of injury.
