Former UK All-American, legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger dies at 87

A Kentucky football legend has passed away.

Former UK All-American Howard Schnellenberger, who played at Kentucky from 1952-56 and spent nearly 50 years coaching in college and in the NFL, has died at the age of 87.

A member of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame, Schnellenberger played two seasons each for head coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant and Blanton Collier and was named a first-team All-American, first-team All-Southeastern Conference by the Associated Press in 1955 and third-team All-Southeastern Conference in 1954. The former Kentucky legend ended his career with 44 receptions for 618 yards (14.0 avg.), 11 touchdowns, and owned a ratio of one touchdown catch for every four pass receptions. Schnellenberger led the Wildcats in receiving during both the 1954 and 1955 seasons.

A lot of people (myself included) wonder how much different UK's fb fortunes might have been had they hired coach Schnellenberger.

you have to wonder. Built winners. The Pipe. Someone refresh my memory,....what is the reason he was not offered? Was that Ivy's time as AD?

"We're on a collision course for the National Championship". He dreamed big and got things done at Louisville. I hated it that a UK Alumn was winning at UL while we were struggling. Still. I loved Schnellenberger. He only coached one season at Oklahoma. A program like that doesn't take to kind to rebuilds. A VERY solid coach. He will be missed.

Why was he not offered? I've heard it said that he wanted "total control" and that was the sticking point. I too wonder what might of been. He was certainly my choice a time or two. When Curry was let go, CM brought Mumme in.

A good friend played for him at UL. He said he was super tough to the point of not giving them water breaks until they all got it right.

I'd say that was the effect playing for the Bear had on him.

Probably. Coaching was much different back then.

That's one of the reasons he lasted one year at Oklahoma.
Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.
