What is the real problem going on with UK football

Something that SEC Network sideline analyst Dawn Davenport said early in Kentucky’s 20-10 loss at Missouri jumped out at me. She was asked what it was like on the UK sideline in the first quarter when it was clear Missouri was clearly playing better and with more energy than UK.

“Sluggish, not a lot of communication, not a lot going on,” she said. “There is just not a lot going on on this sideline.”

That certainly carried over to the field where Missouri dominated the yardage, time of possession and number of offensive plays in a way that made it easy for the Tigers to win.

Kentucky’s lack of a passing game was pointed out numerous times on the SEC Network. Quarterback Terry Wilson did throw a 26-yard scoring pass to Josh Ali in the second half but that was about it for the passing game.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops went to backup quarterback Joey Gatewood in both halves but he did not have any more luck moving the football.

Some fans were very critical of Wilson on social media. His mother, Loise Wilson, also took to social media but had a different take on the game.

Everyone is ate up with the QB situation. IMO the real problem is Chris Rodriguez is not getting the carries. The last 4 years either Snell or Bowden ran with the attitude that you can't tackle me. Rodriguez runs with that same attitude. He needs to have 20 carries a game.We have won by running the ball and we didn't do that Saturday. Why in the world we came out on the first series and threw the ball 3 times is beyond me. We didn't establish what has become Kentucky Football. Whether you like like the grind it out game or not it is what has taken us to 4 bowl games.

The team seemed, to me, to have an emotional let down after the big win at Tennessee. Tired physically and drained emotionally, there was a noticeably absence of focus and sharpness in their play. Mizzou played like a desperate team. There were exceptions in our play, but limited consistency. Offensively, we couldn't get in a rhythm. A dropped pass, a missed assignment, and it was 3 and out. Terry has to be at 100% to be effective and he wasn't. Mizzou was also the fresher team having a week off. It makes a difference in college and in the pros. This is the explanation I gave myself in trying to understand what I was watching. So now it comes down to how the guys handle adversity. If you get down you get walked on, and that is the best reason I know to get back up and keep grinding. Now I'm ready to kick Georgia.

Strangely enough the way this season has played out so far that wouldn't be out of bounds.

Last year, the QB injury forced the team to go to an offense based almost entirely on running the ball.

Two years ago, Wilson was throwing to Garrett Johnson, Dorian Baker, and Lynn Bowden Jr. This year, it's Allen Dailey, Clevan Thomas, Akeem Hayes, Isaiah Epps, DeMarcus Harris and Josh Ali.

Would it be different if those guys were running routes and having the ball thrown at their hands? Or Oliver, Crumes, Drennen, Branham, and Cummings this year or later?
