Here is the Official Ruling on the touchdown that wasn't.

After doing some research and speaking with folks who know, this is what I found out.

First let me explain what the procedure is when a play is under further review. I'm not sure, because I forgot to ask, if the replay official was in the stadium or in a remote area. When a play needs to be reviewed, the Replay Official gets it first. Then Officials in Birmingham get involved also, and all have to agree before an official ruling is relayed to the Referee on the field.

The play in question was ruled on the field as forward motion was stopped before the ball touched the goal line. That call was made by the Field Judge. The knee being down was never a part of the call, hence the ball was properly placed near the goal line. When the Replay Official and Birmingham looked at the film from every angle available, they could not see the ball at all. And after looking several times for the ball, they could not overturn the call on the field due to lack of evidence to the contrary.

Because I listened to the announcers, I thought the call was made because the knee was ruled down and the Officials made another mistake spotting the ball. That's why I try not to listen to folks who know nothing about Officiating.

They still blew the call. All they need do is watch the replay and it's obvious he is a yard deep in the end zone. I have never seen such an obvious score be ruled not a TD.

I'm glad for the update BTW.

    I find the rationale wanting.

I feel and hear your frustration. I also thought the ball reached the goal line, but a yard deep is stretching it a little.

The one replay I saw, it looked like he had 3/4 of his body across the line. The targeting was the "makeup" call i felt. They blew it for reasons i don't know. That was probably the worst call i have ever seen. It's right up there with that PI call in the Saints game a few years back. I wonder if Auburn would've received better courtesy there.

He wasn't a yard deep but it was clear he was in. They couldn't see the ball on replay but I'm confident it was not hovering behind his body. This type of reluctance to reverse a call makes me wonder why they have video review at all. It's a waste of time if they can't correct that one.

At least one poster here at WCN views me as a bit of a conspiracy theorist. I disagree with that and think that I see things as open-minded as a fan can. But with something like this play I can just imagine a group of good ole boys in Birmingham chuckling for a minute as they say "screw it...it's just Kentucky." Much like several years ago when an official counted 12 men on the field for LSU when we kicked off to them. You could clearly see him reach to his backside and grab his flag. He then seemed to shrug it off and watch the return for a touchdown. That type stuff doesn't happen to Bama. And this play would have been 6 pts for Bama.

Thanks for the info and update. It was a bad call. Throw it in with the Snell ejection in the MCB. Cant let it make the season.
