Concern growing for 2020 college football season

The Kentucky Wildcats were geared up for a deep run in March before the NCAA Tournament was abruptly canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Now, while the football team was preparing for an SEC East title run, there are growing concerns that the season may be in jeopardy.

According to SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum, there is a real possibility that the season could be canceled.

“I believe they’re very concerned, Jim, and I think there’s a hope that the season will get underway, I just don’t know in what shape or form,” Finebaum said during Monday’s appearance on WJOX 94.5 FM.

The reason being that the preparation for the football season is being delayed during the Coronavirus pandemic. Teams aren’t able to properly train and get ready for the season.

“Football is, you know, is April, it’s March and April, it’s July, it’s every month, really, under the sun. And I think that’s what, from a sports standpoint, I think that’s really what we’re focusing on. And I just think it’s impossible to tell.”

While Finebaum expects most athletic departments to be prepared for simply difficulty in getting the season underway, he does believe that most aren’t yet considering a shortened, or canceled, season.

While that may have been true a few days ago, some coaches, like North Carolina Tar Heels coach Mack Brown, are cognizant of the threat the virus poses.

“Coaches really have no clue,” Brown said on a teleconference Monday of the 2020 season. “There is a fear of ‘would we have a season?’ ‘Would we have a partial season?’ ‘What does a partial season mean?’ There is a great concern because of the remedy that comes in with football.

All this conjecture and hypotheticals are freaking a certain folk out. To say that there are concerns for the college football season in MARCH is ridculous at best. Nobody knows. Let's take this day by day and stop worrying about what the future may bring.

At first, I was like you, BH, and I still believe we'll have a full season, but the article does raise some points I had not previously thought about.

Didn't read it but been hearing the chatter on talk radio. With no Spring ball and Fall camps players will be injury prine due to lack of conditioning. While that may hold some water, these are athletes. I am sure Stoops has the guys doing something during all this.

I think I'm correct, there are no students on campus. And I agree, CS and all other coaches have instructed their players to lift, run, throw catch and train on their own.

Let's hope the players have the self-discipline needed to do what they need to do on their own. I've tried this, and it's not easy pushing and punishing yourself w/o any oversight.

I briefly thought about Fall without football. The only way I can manage any of this is day to day. I think football and everything else will become secondary if we start looking like Italy. The tragedy there is just unbelievable. Without adequate testing no one knows. It's like walking in the woods on a moonless night, and heavy cloud cover, while there are pissed-off and/or hungry grizzly bears roaming around. Ok, that's a bit dramatic. Testing is ramping up so we should have a better idea in a couple three weeks. I'm coping with watching video's of games ... that we've won.

For our players who live in cities. They aren't going to be able to do anything other than pushups, burpees, and air squats for the next several weeks. Hopefully, they will have restored access to campus facilities by June.

Scott Satterfield said that he thought the lack of Spring Practice will benefit experienced teams. Since we have a lot of returning players I hope he's right.

I would say he's probably right.

                      And talent.

If everyone is a little disorganized and under-practiced, experience and talent will matter even more than normal.

About ten days ago I said that if we lost the entire MLB Season I would not miss it, but if we lost college football, I would be very upset. It occurs to me now what a stupid comment that was on my part. If there is no college football this fall, that means things will be so bad that we will hardly even notice. If this crisis drags on into the late summer, we will be in some very, very serious trouble.

Another factor, which has previously been discussed, is how diligent the players will be working out on their own. Sometimes your more talented athletes tend to slack off thinking they can get by on talent alone.

Hopefully if they intend to earn a big paycheck playing FB, that could change their mind.

Kirk Herbstreit made some waves when he suggested he’s be surprised if there was any football this year.

Not sure if he was speaking with any knowledge or just speculating though.
