Please read post #27 in this thread. Prior to the rule change, a player had to miss two seasons due to "reasons beyond his control" to be granted a sixth year. A redshirt was not considered beyond his control. As I understand it now, a redshirt during a players first year in considered beyond his control as the decision was made by the coach not the player. I'm still looking for a confirmation of this rule change but since the two Michigan players were granted a sixth year, I'm fairly confident the rule has changed.

Well, honestly, if he wants it and is able to win the starting slot that far out more power to him. I think a lot of us are automatically assuming TW will grow by leaps and bounds each year. Although his numbers were fine pre injury, I'm not sure his abilities put him top half of the SEC.
