Miami coach Mark Richt to retire

The 2018 bowl season is still in full swing, and we already have a big surprise in the coaching ranks.
Miami coach Mark Richt is retiring, per multiple reports:

This is surprising, to say the least. I wonder if coach Richt and Williams didn't get along and coach Richt told him he was retiring and not to leave on account of him?

The more interesting aspect of this is whether Stoops will be a candidate. KSR reported he might be. It would be much easier to build a program in the ACC.

If nothing else, Stoops might be about to get a raise.

One would have to think that with Miami's rich tradition, they could land a higher profile coach than coach Stoops.

Higher profile? I'm not sure you realize what Stoops has done here and how he is perceived nationally. When we beat Penn State he will likely be a very "hot commodity." I hope I'm wrong. The one thing Miami has is an inside track to all the south Florida talent. We have better facilities and he is well paid so it would take more than a little to recruit him away from here.

            Well....here goes.

            Some info (and rumors).
Mark Right has often spoken of doing missionary work when coaching is done. Could be time.

Coach Richts wife had pretty serious health issues some time ago. Hopefully that has not resurfaced.

Bob Stoops may be the candidate looked hardest at of the family

I’m not surprised. He hasn’t been very good at Miami, and after that no show, he was likely going to be fired in the next year.

I've been following UK sports in general, and fb in particualr, since 1954 so, yes, I'm very much aware of what coach Stoops has accomplished at UK. I'm not aware that he is perceived as an upper echelon coach nationally. If we beat Penn St., I'm not sure just how much that will change the national perception of coach Stoops. At any rate, I'd be willing to bet a pretty sizable chunk of money that he won't be the head fb coach at the U next season.

While it might be easier to build a program in the ACC he has quite a bit of a head start here. With a top 20 team, legitimate SEC depth, speed, and all that jazz.

I doubt CMS leaves but my goodness the fact if he does is he breaks the 'dead end job' horse collar the UK job has had.

You aren’t wrong, but with two good recruiting classes he’s got a team in the top 3 of the ACC. I can see why that’d be appealing.

Name one that would take the job.

I think Leach is ready to slide somewhere else. Gus has definitely walked the tightrope at Auburn. It seems every year Alabama has a coordinator ready to step up. BOB Stoops is readily available. Not real sure why Brown hasn't got a call to a P5 team.

Course, Mark S may have his agent already talking to the Canes.

If CMS gets an offer from Miami or any other team and his agent tries to parlay that into a raise at UK, I hope Mitch will say: "That would be hard to turn down."

That's a quote or something close to it that I remember reading that MB said to GuyMO when he was talking to Baylor.

There is so much money involved it just gets to the oh, my stage. Coach will either be rich or rich. The deal that Barnhart signed him to at Kentucky was until the last couple years thought to be an insanely good deal for coach Stoops. Unless CMS gets a contract on the order of what Taggert has I would THINK he stays. Then again Bobby Petrino got a 14 million dollar (and that was just for himself, not counting family) parachute.....for throwing in the towel on a season.

Dunno....this football stuff is strange business.
