Jeff Brohm To U of L

It's all over the Internet that it's looking like a done deal.

He is a UL alum has to be the main reason. I figured he was smart enough though not take that job. But I guess not.

Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

I actually thought Brohm might pass only because he's in a P5 conference with a shot at the playoffs with sufficient improvement. Clemson's a bigger obstacle than any of the Big 10 schools.

The big risk with "Hometown hero comes home to coach alma mater" is, if things go south in a bad way, all the good will built prior to this move is gone.

Another parallel is Dabo Swinney. When Saban finally retires, you know Swinney is top of the list, and as a homegrown Bama boy and Bama player, he'll probably take the job. But if he fails, can he go back home again and it be the same?

BIG difference is Swinney is an established coaching star. Brohm is still in the process and a ways to go.

I've known part of the Brohm family for a while and Jeff's agent and I have a few mutual friends. Trust me when I say his mom rules the roost. To the point that he didn't accept offers he had out west because she didn't give her approval. His agent has been talking to Louisville since he beat Ohio State and initial contact came from Brohm. It's been a "done deal" for about a month that he would be their coach they just had to work out the details. I'm not nearly as afraid about this hire as some. He's a good coach, but I don't think he's the world beaters some think he is. My main concern is that we get Wandale signed the second we are able to.

That and all of his family is here. His mom calls the shots and a big reason is to keep her happy. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it couldn't be more true. His mom is not the easiest person to get along with and takes entirely too much credit for the limited success her children have had, to put it nicely.

Word is Tyra and Brohm met yesterday and an answer was to come today. A couple questions come to mind. How long will they give him to turn UL around, and with the disaster of Petrino having his family as assistants, will Brohm be allowed to bring his brothers along?

I think Bobby got the quick yank because of the extreme disfunction and no one wanted to work for or with him, hence having 3 family members on staff and van Gorder pitching for the job rather than being sought after. I would think that Jeff will get more than 3 years to show progress. From the way it appears, the whole organization was a dumpster fire. It's possible there are several players he won't even want on the team.

I heard a caller bring this up on Valvano's show one day. The chasmic difference is Brian Brohm has played at a high college level and has some NFL experience. Nick Petrino played QB at Trinity primarily because his dad was Bobby. In that scenario, I'd be significantly more comfortable with Brian (or any Brohm) on staff than a Petrino son or son-in-law.

The first live football game I ever attended was Flaget vs St. X(my alma mater). This was before I even started grade school, so we're talking 60 years ago. Oscar Brohm was the QB and he absolutely torched St. X that game lol. Many years later, I met him and his wife at a cook out. They were very nice folks. Jeff and his brothers all went to Trinity, and are legends there. Never met any of the boys. IF hired, Jeff will instantly instil a massive culture change in that program so I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of players get tossed. The Brohm's are all highly respected here and it's well deserved...they're "good" people. Is he worth north of 5 million $ plus? Don't know, but he's the perfect hire for Tyra. He'll win and I think he can heal the team, donors, and fanbase like no other choice.

If I had to bet, I'd say he takes the gig, but I don't think Brohm to UofL is a guarantee, and I also don't think Brohm being super successful at UofL is either.

Probably for another thread, but I heard from a big UofL donor that Petrino had another "off the field incident"....who knows if he did or not, but I wouldn't doubt it...

Other than the meeting with Tyra, there aren't many signs that he will leave Purdue. He hasn't scheduled a team meeting and he will not accept an announcement without talking to his players first, He has a list of recruiting visits lined up. Purdue will up the ante including increases in salary for assistant coaches. They want to keep him. If it is true about his mother, then I would say with a high degree of probability that his wife doesn't want to return to Louisville. Only one alpha female allowed under the roof, with all due respect. Then again, this may not apply. I've heard the same thing that Uncle Dave has said about the family being good and genuine people. I would guess he is highly thought of in his community in West Lafayette as well. The timing may just not be right. I don't know if it ever is/

I agree regarding the timing. He's been at two programs in 4 years and beginning to build something at a program in a P5 conference. It'd be better timing were he established at Purdue - say 5-7 years with winning seasons and several bowl wins.
