IIRC that Penn State team did have a lot of talent. More than UK that's for sure. I always thought UK got a big break getting invited to a New Years Day bowl. IIRC they were only 7-5. I'm sure having Tim Couch was the main reason they were invited.
    Kentucky fan since 1971.

Did Whalen get hurt in that game too?? He dislocated his elbow against Syracuse the following yr in the bowl game.

Yeah, it was mostly because of Couch, an exciting offense, bringing lots of fans and the Outback CEO is a UK grad....

That game was very frustrating and exposed the weakness in the Mumme system. I remember having like a 4th and 1 and Penn State was playing a 3-man front with wide gaps and, sure enough, we threw an incomplete pass. PSU knew we were going to throw on every down.

Penn State was actually a WHOLE lot better across the board than Kentucky
The Tim Couch wave got us in that game.
I don't think Whalen was the primary receiver until Bonner took the reigns the next year and he broke his elbow against Syracuse....iir, Syracuse had Donovan McNabb as quarterback.

That was Syracuse. I was at that one too.

I will enjoy the bowl game no matter who we play but the game that would get the most interest from me would be Penn. ST.

that cost us the game. I hate the Air Raid offense

In my opinion, it wasn't the system so much as the man in charge. Even with the Air Raid, you don't have to throw on every down.

Air raid would have been nice few games this year.

Also would have lost those games. UK had no qualified QB to run an offense like that. It would have been a disaster.

Even if they had the QB for it they didn't have the receivers to play that game.
