Old Memories (Clips of Derrick Ramsey)

Here are some clips of Derrick Ramsey who was a star on the 1976 (SEC Champions and Peach Bowl winner) team and the 1977 team that finished the season 10-1 and ranked no. 6 in the nation. As Archie Bunker used to say, "those were the days".

You're quite welcome, RV. My memory doesn't quite extend back to the days of coach Bryant. My first recollection of UK fb begins during the Blanton Collier era. Having said that, 1976 and 1977 were the most exciting years of UK fb for me.

I was 12 years old for the 77 season. I vaguely followed the FB Cats the prior 76 season, but the 77 season is when I became a true UK FB fan. Without a doubt the best UK FB team of my lifetime arguably the best since Bear Bryant left town.

I remember Ramsey very well. Those were exciting times in Lexington.

Ramsey was a horse of a QB. Not your typical drop back passer that is preferred in today's game. He was a brutal runner who could run over any defensive player. That 1977 team is easily the best I have ever seen at UK. They were completely dominant. The UK Tennessee game was on Youtube as I watched it back in the fall. That was actually a very close game with UK winning near the end. But a great 10-1 season that may never be duplicated at UK.

Ramsey went on to play in the NFL as a tight end for many years with the Oakland Raiders. Not many QB's end being tight ends.

That's because Derrick was essentially a QB in a TE's body. He could throw well enough to keep defenses honest, but running was his bread and butter. I didn't mean to state the obvious, Kevin, for some reason I just felt compelled to say that.

No doubt about it. He was a very average passer. I think he had hurt his arm by the end of the 1977 season and couldn't throw at all. They would bring in the back up QB, who's name I have forgotten now, in obvious passing situations. That backup completed two of three passes in the Tennessee game. One a long gainer that was a big part of that win.

Mike Deaton was the backup QB. Green County. I think that long pass in the Tennessee game was to Felix Wilson. We were deep in our own territory and that play got the drive going that led to the winning TD.

Thanks. That was his name. No doubt that was the key play of that game.

I was born in 1972 but thanks to a wonderful father was a UK fan at a very young age. Still my memory of Ramsey is very sketchy. Paul Calhoun and Bill Randell are some of the earliest players I remember very clearly.

If I remember, Derrick was a bit like Dobbs at Tennessee in that he really wasn't appreciated (mostly because he wasn't a passer at all) until about halfway through his junior season.
lol.....I remember reading an article that a reporter saw Ramsey working out and thought he was a defensive end.

                          Here's one for you.....
I was at a UK basketball game and Ramsey was dressed out and played. I think it was the 76 season after Robey was injured.

About ten years ago I was coming out of Five Star in HILLVIEW when I heard a voice ask me, " Hey buddy, how far am I from the Hooters here on Preston Highway?". I turn to look and it was Ramsey sitting in a smooth Mercedes. I said, "Hey! You're Derrick Ramsey!".
"That's what they tell me", he replied back.
So I give him directions and told him he was my Dad's favorite UK quarterback. He was extremeley polite and we had small talk for a few and he was on his way. Seemed like a really good guy. He was on some good teams for us.

He played in two games on the varsity against Georgia and Mississippi. He played on the JV team too. An uncle of mine worked at UK at the time and got to see every home game and some practices. He said Ramsey could get his elbows over the rim on rebounds. He was quite an athlete that's for sure.
