    Talking defense

Does anyone (besides me) think that UK would be well put to see if they can bring in a defensive coordinator this off season? If so, who are some of those floating around? OR do you believe we need to give the current defensive staff another year to solidify?

All I know is that the defense is BAD. VERY bad. That was especially evident the last two games where teams ran at will on us and we could not tackle anybody.

Now, that having been said, i am not nearly smart enough to know what the solution is or if we need a new staff or whatever.

I just know it needs to get better -- much better.

I'll let Stoops take it from there.

      "Could not tackle anybody"

You realize, right, that UGA had 2 5 star RBs with both speed and power that stayed a year longer than they had to. Their job is to make people miss, and run over tacklers, they are very good at it. That 3rd back of theirs was just as good. The next two are 5 stars too. UGA is so good because they are deep. We aren't deep. Changing coordinators usually hurts depth. Being able to run out fresh bodies helps immensely.

UL had a heisman trophy winner. He's good at making people miss too. He's attracted some good players around him.

ur best DT, a freshman, was injured, they looked a lot better with him in there. The other ones just weren't as good, unlike UGA.

We have looked lost on defense the majority of the aeason. We had two good showings against USC and Vandy. The other "efforts" were rather pathetic and embarrassing. I would like to see a new DC and/or a new DB coach. As bad as our tackling became, our secondary, which was a supposed strength, got toasted ALL YEAR LONG.

UGA is really good. Especially at RB. UL is decent. They at least have a great QB. He's historically good. But we're always going to have decent and good teams on our schedule. We're not going to drop out of the SEC and only play EKU level teams. I can't fault SBCM for being dissapointed in our defense those last 2 games. If letting UL score on every possession--often quickly with no residence--is fine because Jackson is good then our team is not going to progress any farther.

We were consistently no where near their receivers. Presumably that's because we were keyed in on Jackson and Bonafon running the ball. We hardly slowed them down either. BC and NC St. didn't make them look like the Patriots.

Not saying we should have won either game--especially UGA game. But pretending that wasn't ugly defense isn't objective and I'd like to see improvement. The problem wasn't so much we couldn't tackle "anyone" but we could touch "anyone" till well down field.

I'm kind of divided on how I feel about hiring a new DC and someone to coach the DB's and Safeties. If we have the personnel, for it, I would like to see us go back to the 4-3 def. next season.

We don't though. We have trouble finding enough DTs in the 3-4. It would be better for our outside LBs who are really DE's but I think we would continue to get killed up the middle.

We've haven't had a defense that puts the fear of God in our opposition since I was a student in 1977.

For one it isn't obvious that it is a D coordinator problem. It's an incredibly complex endeavor and firing staff may appease fans and not fix a thing.

I thought we defended the rush okay. Better than I thought we would: 64th in the nation. Mediocre but it's better than we've been, which is (IIRC) usually in the 90s.

We could not stop teams from passing on us. As others have noted (again and again, ad inf.) we weren't even close to figuring out how to stop those passes to the middle of the field. The distance between our defenders and their receivers was frighteningly large. And that's a thing that started to happen like in week three and it only got worse.

115th in the nation in passing D. That's 15th from the bottom.

It would be easier to swallow if we didn't have a coach who came in as being defensive-minded.
