Kentucky punter arrested for public intoxication after Ole Miss game

Kentucky punter Matt Panton was arrested and charged with public intoxication on Saturday night after the loss to Ole Miss.
Panton, a graduate transfer from Columbia University originally from Melbourne, Australia, was booked into the Lexington jail after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to jail records.

Cat fans are always calling for heads to roll when something like this happens in Louisville or Knoxville. It'll be interesting to see how many games, if any, Panton misses.

No one's head should roll for a PI - and I'd say that about any player (unless said player already had a history or something). Panter also deserves some wiggle room on this one because he's Australian. Walking around drunk is second nature where he's from.

Run him till he pukes up his beer, then call it a day.

It's a PI... you have to be awful square to think anything beyond some extra laps is in order.

He didn't hit his girlfriend, he didn't sell any illegal substances, he didn't drive that way.

The easy way out. Isn't that what's wrong with our young folks today? Spoiled and not wanting to face up to responsibility.

What is the easy way out you are referencing?

Where'd this come from? Genuine question; not being combative. Just don't see any reference to an "easy way" in the thread.

A college kid (over 21) was drinking?

                  I am absolutely stunned

Some were indicating no games lost, and extra running as punishment. In my mind, that's the easy way out. I never want to appear argumentative, but that's my opinion.

                      He’s of age, though.

And would the law ask anything more of him than a fine for a first-offense PI? Doubtful. He's not going to spend a weekend in jail.

A judge wouldn't make anyone else miss a day on the job for a first PI, so Stoops should act in kind: fine him with some extra work, then be done with it.

Having your name plastered all over the news and the internet for a PI, is pretty ridiculous. If I were on that team, I would have gotten drunk too, after giving away the game to Ole Miss.

So suspend him? Kick him off the team? What is the suggestion that isn’t the easy way? Under UK’s over reaching code of conduct he is going to get fined $100 and a 2.5 hour class.

Good point. I'm just trying to think as a coach and how this could effect the rest of the team and parents of recruits. If this kid misses a game, others will see this is not acceptable. Each TEAM player has a responsibility to their teammates. Is a chewing out and running steps the norm for an of age kid? Yes, but should it be?

How many arrests are made near college campuses for this? Was he being routy or threatening someone? Curious.
